Tell me how a low-budget cable special shot on video in 1981 is going to benefit from being included on a Blu-ray disc. Better still: tell me why one would want to have SD content eat into the space available that could be better-used on a Blu-ray disc.
You can go to Amazon.com right now and buy the '81 DVD for $8.72 and not only will it play on your Blu-ray player it will play on your DVD player as well. You don't have to wait until October 4th to watch it either, you can have it tomorrow.
Furthermore, Warner Bros. doesn't even have the rights. Reubens owns the rights to pretty much everything but the two theatrical features (which are Warner Bros. and Paramount) and has licensed it all to Image. That goes for the '81 special, the entire run of "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (including the Christmas Special) and the '11 Special as well.

I got the '81 special for like... $5. New. At Half Price Books. 3 years ago.
As far as it being included in this release: No. Different companies own the rights to the special and this movie. It's not a Warners release. This is most likely going to be a straight port of the DVD with 1080p video, DTS-MA, and the same extras that will land either at or slightly after release, in a regular BD elite recyclable case with no insert besides a sheet of paper explaining that it is manufactured to the highest quality, for $9.99 or below.
Take that to the bank!

This should look, and sound fantastic in blu-ray. I love this movie, especially Danny Elfman's score. I'll still keep the DVD for now because, it have the isolated soundtrack, as one of the extra features.

I thought he was talking about an HBO special about the making of the movie. That I would've appreciated. I have to agree, though, if it's available on DVD and it isn't related to this movie, not much reason to include it. It would make more sense as a supplement on that release of the 2011 special.
