Re: Jurassic Park: Ultimate Trilogy - 10/25/11
I thought it may have been my setup too, but this is the first time I've noticed this effect in over a year. A few days after I purchased my TV last year I first noticed the soap opera effect and, after some research, found I had to turn off the motion smoother option. I did see a noticeable difference when I would enable and disable the motion smoother while I was watching different statements of Jurassic Park. I looked at a few other settings on the TV and my PS3 but I didn't really see anything else I could adjust. The only other difference I noticed was changing the 24p Direct in setting from 48 Hz to 60 Hz. That seemed to make the image a little better, but the difference was pretty miniscule. I'll check it out again when I get my Blu-ray player hooked up to the TV in my bedroom; it very well could've been my eyes playing tricks on me.

I checked the movie on the BD player in my bedroom and did not notice the soap opera effect, so there must be a setting I need to tweak on my basement TV. I'll hook my bedroom player up to my basement
TV tomorrow and see if I need to focus on the TV or the PS3 (my default player).

"Soap opera effect" is caused by the frame interpolation function (SmoothMotion, Auto Motion Plus, etc.) in the TV. It is not something encoded on the disc or caused by the Blu-ray player.
You say that you turned this feature off on your TV. Possible that something got reset back to the factory default without you realizing it?

I think I may have found what was giving me the soap opera effect. On my PS3, I found an option called 1080P 24Hz output (HDMI), which was set to automatic. I turned this off and then watched a few segments of Jurassic Park. I did not notice any motion smoothing after shutting off that option, so it looks like this was what was giving me the trouble.

^ I would think "automatic" or "on" is the preferred setting on the PS3 for watching Blu-ray.

However, maybe his TV doesn't like 24 fps and is doing something funky to the signal?

The PS3 was the only thing that changed in my basement setup since I bought my TV last year. About two months ago, my old PS3 died and I replaced it with a new slim PS3. I've been watching movies pretty consistently on it since then, but Jurassic Park was the only movie I noticed this effect on since last year. I didn't notice this effect on my bedroom TV or when I hooked up my bedroom BD player to the basement TV, so that made me think it was a setting on the PS3.

^That's pretty much what I'm seeing; it looks like the motion in certain scenes (the scene where Grant gets out of the jeep at the triceratops area is one of them) is being smoothed out and it looks unnatural. I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but now I keep thinking I notice it in other Blu-rays I've watched. I Watched The Poseidon Adventure Saturday morning and thought I noticed it in one or two scenes and I watched half of Live and Let Die last night and thought I noticed it there as well (again, in just a handful of scenes). I do notice a difference betwween turning the motion smoother on and off on my TV. It is currently set to off and has been off since last summer.

If it's any help, my basement TV is a Pannisonic Veria. I have a simmilar model in my living room, so I may hook my BD player and PS3 up to it and see if anything looks different.

Could the higher refresh rate of many of todays' TV's add to this issue as well (above and beyond frame interpolation and smoothing effects)?

I'm not sure if it's the TV or not since I just noticed this within the last week. I didn't notice it when I hooked up my bedroom BD player to the TV, so that's why I started looking at settings on my PS3.

I'd like the first Jurassic Park on its own. Universal is releasing a DVD on August 28th, but no sign of the Blu-ray. The UK has a region-free Augmented Reality Blu for a good price - anybody have that one?

On March 26, Universal is releasing each film individually in BD/DVD/DC combo packs.
On April 23, the 3D version of Jurassic Park will arrive in a BD/DVD/DC combo pack.

They finally released the Jurassic Park movies individually! I love the original but can't stand the sequels, so I held off buying the boxset. Got the original today at Best Buy for $16.99.
Now we need is for Lucasfilm to release the Indiana Jones movies individually as I only want Raiders, and Universal to release the Back to the Future movies individually as I only want the original.

Yeah, I got the trilogy for about that. Not a big fan of the second one. The third I like except it is rather anti-climactic. But for the few bucks, I don't mind having the set. Obviously if you hate the movies then every penny is wasted.

I went ahead and bought all three at Best Buy last night; $16.99 each but with a free $10 gift card and $24 in moviecash so it was good enough for me to upgrade over my accidentally purchased full screen DVDs.
