Re: Destroy All Monsters & Godzilla v. Megalon - Fall '11
Over at Tohokingdom forums, somebody posted a frame of a cropped scene, looks like Media Blasters took a scene from a 16x9 HD cropped transfer, then matted it down further to 2.35. But I didn't notice any other issues. I don't have another widescreen transfer to compare it to, but just eyeballing it and watching for composition and framing.

So, apparently Media Blasters had the SE discs already pressed and ready to go last year when the problem with Destroy All Monsters hit the fan. Not only have some of those original pressing discs with all the extras slipped into the supply chain, there are also discs pressed with the barebones DVD catalog# but with the extras. I just found one of these at FYE in Schaumburg, IL.
There's no way to tell from the outside packaging, but if you feel like gambling $15, you just might get lucky.

In the link you posted, the owner of MB seemed just as surprised as everyone (based on an e-mail exchange with one of the posters). It could be an act tho.

I don't believe a word Media Blasters says. Over the course of home entertainment they've lied time and time again and seem to be the most problematic releasing company there is.

If you are able to find one of these Megalon DVDs with the extras, there's also an easter egg. On the extras menu page, move the cursor over to Godzilla's head and press play, and there is a trailer reel for various Japanese scifi and monster movies that's really fun.

You checked the disc right? Cause even some of the discs with the current catalog# (1222 I think) still have the extras. That's what mine is.

Yep, I checked. No option for "Extras" listed. Tempted to try my luck again, but I doubt it's worth the effort or $.

Some enlightenment:

Based on the reorder figures the pressing would have been well under 1000 copies, with the numbers most likely much closer to 500. No more copies of the Special Edition will be pressed until Toho completes their approvals for the extra features.

Edit: I'm talking about the Biollante disc in this post -
It's pretty much a lock at this point. Somebody from Echo Bridge was posting at the TohoKingdom forums for the past couple of months about how he stopped this from getting a barebones release. It's sub and dub, with a making-of documentary. There was a commentary recorded, but Toho didn't approve it in time to make replication. The contact said that as soon as Toho approves it, they'll start replicating it with the commentary, so keep that in mind when you buy it.
I plan on buying the barebones DVD, then when the Blu gets released with the commentary I'll make my own 2 disc set.

I just foudn out about the Megalon disc coming out about 2 weeks ago, then to my surprise I read about the accidental release of the extras. Now by a weird twist of events I now have two copies, both have the extras! Since I'm not going to hold my breath for Toho and Media Blasters to work out a legit release schedule for these, I'm one Godzilla fanatic who's happy to have this collector's item.

Can i ask if anyone knows the reason why Toho don't want to put English subs on their releases? Don't they want Western audiences buying their products? I'd have happily tried to fork out the hefty prices for the Japanese Blus if they'd had subs on them ( actually ended up buying FINAL WARS anyway!)

From Media Blasters FB:
"Godzilla issues have finally come to a settlement with Toho so going back to the BDs and DVDs work but will take lots of time."
****************************************
Yea, no shit. When don't they take a lot of time on a title? At least we know something may be forthcoming.

It's great they're saying the issue's been solved, but I'll hang onto my DAM and GvM discs until SE blu-rays actually grace the shelves and aren't immediately pulled.

Yeah, I got *damn* lucky and happened across one of the Megalon discs with all the extras, that's not leaving my hands until I have the Blu in hand, and even then I can see some of the extras being left off so I'll probably end up making my own combo pack.

Good luck, mine was a total crapshoot. I got mine from FYE, and I opened it at the mall because some folks were saying you could tell by the disc, but the label was for the plain version. But when I got it home and played it, all the extras were there.
From a write-up after the fact:

There's one on eBay, confirmed with extras for $36 BIN (not my auction). You could also buy a bunch from places like FYE and gamble on getting a good one.
