Taxi Driver, How To Train Your Dragon, and/or Minority Report would be three good ones to start with, all for different reasons (classic restoration, CG animation, modern polish).

First one on the list -go for The Incredibles. Apt name for the level of detail you're going to see. Just put it in myself, absolute reference quality.
Funny that Squidbillies is one of the possibilities.

If there was only a forum where one can ask for recommendations....
And I would vote Avatar...followed closely by Apocalypse Now or Taxi Driver (to see how nice an older movie can look)

Re: What should my 1st Blu-ray in HD experience be?
Avatar is fantastic in terms of technical A/V qualities but I still have some serious problems with the story (don't let the fact I own both versions fool you - one was free).
Every Pixar film thus far has been fantastic in terms of A/V and story. My first Blu-ray was Wall-E and I was blown away by it. I was happy with the selection for my first. But since this is a momentous occasion you might not want an animated film ..? I don't know.
There are a lot to pick from your list. Serenity, District 9, Terminator Salvation, The Dark Knight and Rambo are all technically savvy choices for live action that I have experienced with large audio and visual effects components. But some older or more subdued choices like Apocalypse Now, The Road Warrior, even Battle Royale come alive in High Def. Too many choices.

I'm a big Mad Max fan. Just watched The Road Warrior the other night and it was like seeing it for the first time. Actually, since it's the Australian cut, I technically did see it for the first time!

Saving Private Ryan or Braveheart, but those aren't on your list. Out of your list: Inception and Toy Story 3.

Avatar is also a very good choice, but I like the idea of watching a fav first as well. If I had Die Hard might have gone with it...how is that in hd anyway?
Serenity is a possibilty as it is one of my all time favs as well...

Are any of your personal top ten favorite films in the list of blu-rays you own? I think it's more meaningful to see something you are very familiar with so you can notice all the things you'd never seen before. I'd seen 2001 probably 50 times over the years, including at IMAX, but watching it on blu-ray made me feel like I was watching a brand new movie. I was literally gasping aloud, and I watched it alone!

oh that's too easy:
Shaun of the Dead
what kind of sound system do you have scott1598: 2-channel stereo, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1??
because the eyes can't have ALL the fun...
the best sound would be these discs:
The Incredibles
Red
Unstoppable
Almost Famous
The Social Network
Piranha (2010)
The A-Team
Salt
Inception
The Dark Knight
Predators
Batman Begins
Inglourious Basterds

Iron Man 2
High Tension
Kick-Ass
Rambo (EC)

Re: What should my 1st Blu-ray in HD experience be?
That is an excellent point about animated film as first. I might want too see how awesome live action is first, though I do plan on watching my fav baseball team as my very first HD induction but timing of game might not coincide with final set up so...
Avatar is also a very good choice, but I like the idea of watching a fav first as well. If I had Die Hard might have gone with it...how is that in hd anyway?

Serenity is one of my faves too, and a worthy BD, but not one I'd pick for showoff.
Die Hard is a great, rewatchable movie but not a standout BD.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole BD. I thought the animation is on par or better than anything Pixar put out recently. The story was average at best but the animation is awesome.
