I'd say Avatar but there's one not on your list that is really a "sleeper" when you mention video or showing off and it's Monsters,Inc. It has a world of colors that rivals that of the Toy Story movies. And Cars is no slouch either.

By the way to really show a deep contrast and excellent black detail the first Underworld-Unrated is the best I've seen.

For one thing, neither of those films were on your list to choose. For another, both look good on blu but I wouldn't use either when others are much better to show off a system.

So, sounds like you're not going to go with anyone's recommendation? Wasn't that the point of this thread? There are some great recommendations listed here.

Nothing against those two flicks, but I can't imagine anybody turning to either of them for an inaugural spin.

Re: What should my 1st Blu-ray in HD experience be?

great recommendations all around and yes i did go with two of them. thanks to all who contributed...

and my very first Blu-ray in HD experience was...

(drum roll)...
Spoiler:

had to put on my updated prescription glasses to get the full effect and it was simply amazing, right from the opening Walt Disney logo when the disc is loading. the colors just popped and almost looked 3D.

and the the sound. it was booming from all the directions and so crisp and clear. the guns shots, shattered glass. wow!

i still don't know if i am getting the full effect or have my tv calibrated correctly, because i thought some of the scenes weren't popping as i thought they might have. the jungle scenes were the best. lush and vibrant. the water effects were also dazzling.

overall, excellent first start.

my second Blu this night was a little less enthusiastic. i know the source is some 35 years know, but i didn't get the overwhelming experience i thought i would. and that second choice was...

Spoiler:

i thought there was a lot of grain inherent in the background when looking up close. from afar, maybe 6 feet, it was unnoticeable, but really showed when i tested up close.

some scenes were very murky, especially the climax.

i dunno, maybe i was expecting too much from this one or again not calibrated properly? but would be lying if i was saying i was blown away like so many have described in the dedicated thread. now, also, i have not watched the DVD in some time so the comparison is lost on me by not remembering the former.

i will say that i also popped on Sin City on HDNM and that simply looked spectacular. that was like watching for first time. the B/W and then the dolup of color was just incredible.

i'll tell you honestly that i have been more impressed with the crispness and unbelievable picture quality from the tv channel pictures (Yankees on YES and FOX, other Premium movie stations and even broadcast stations), those have simply blown my mind.

and don't even get me started on how amazing Crysis 2 looked on 360. i figured this was a game tailored for HD simply because in SD i couldn't even read the dialogue or what my next mission was. put it on for a few seconds and i could read it like i had lasiks surgery and i was watching life in a whole new way again.

now that was an experience for the few minutes i tested. the visuals were absolutely stunning.

wow! have i been missing out!!!

now that we talked about stuff on the list, what are some reference quality Blus not on the list that really/truly show the power of the HD medium?

If you're wanting to stay away from "classic" cinema:

Transformers 2 is the better movie, but Tron Legacy is absolutely gorgeous and easily best blu of the year.
