Terry Gilliam’s incredible movie Brazil is coming to Blu-Ray Disc in July, courtesy of Universal Home Entertainment .
Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean), Robert De Niro (The Godfather) and Michael Palin (Monty Python and the Holy Grail) star in this landmark cult classic that dazzles and thrills with its Academy Award® nominated, groundbreaking art direction and sharply satirical original screenplay. In a future world, a government clerk finds his life destroyed when he tries to correct an administrative error that caused a massive chain reaction of mistaken identity. Despite his efforts, he finds himself an enemy of the state. Hailed as a modern masterpiece, visionary director Terry Gilliam’s (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) pitch-black comedy takes a highly imaginative and chilling look at a “perfect” future where technology reigns supreme and bureaucracy overrules love for the sake of efficiency.
Featuring a 1080p high definition transfer with DTS 5.1 HD Master Audio track, the disc will also contain BD-Live features, as well as Universal’s Pocket BLU App and My Scenes.
“Brazil” will arrive in stores around the country on July 12 for $26.98.

This is one of those Criterions I would actually buy, and by Universal releasing it, it's very unlikely Criterion will any time in the near future. Guess this is a tie-in for Fear and Loathing...which Universal already released on Blu-ray and has now licensed to Criterion. Criterion didn't want (or couldn't get) Brazil?

didn't Gilliam say he was doing features for the Criterion. WTF?! Did I somehow miss Universal announcing when they'd take it back?! Damnit.
With all this talk about Sucker Punch, I was getting all happy and excited for when Criterion would get it out on BD.

I am sure we will get a Criterion Blu also. Gilliam has mentioned he was working on it. Also, Criterion has announced a Blu of Fear and Loathing, even though Universal has released it on Blu-Ray already. I wouldn't be surprised if this follows the same pattern.

Meh. If it looks and sounds good I might get it if I can find it cheap, just because I like the movie so much and I can always just give it to someone later on down the line.

It seems like Universal likes releasing the Gilliam titles first themselves to get first crack at the market, then lets Criterion do their thing.
Edit: There's unofficial word from a Criterion employee that they are indeed working on a Blu-ray of Brazil:

Same here. If the A/V quality is top notch and it's the director's cut I'll get it. I rented the 3-Disc Brazil well over a decade ago, and couldn't ever see myself revisiting the bonus materials, so I see no need to pay a premium price to Criterion.

It will come out on Criterion also...just like the Universal bare bones DVD was in print while the Criterion package was. I love this film, but my 3 disc Criterion will hold me over until Criterion issues the blu.

Ad artwork, clearly. In that linked Blu-Ray.com thread, the guy says there was a 14-month window between F&L Universal and Criterion Blus. If the wait on Brazil is the same, that's another 14 months I don't have to sell my DVD and upgrade to the CC Blu, plus I'd probably wait until a B&N 50% off sale to grab it anyway.

Yeah, Brazil was released on DVD first from Universal as a bare-bones, then later Criterion released their 3-DVD set of it. Same thing happened with Fear and Loathing on DVD, although the Universal DVD had a few extras.

Re: Brazil (Universal) - 7/12/2011
I still have the non-anamorphic DVD so I'll get this on release day and then do the triple dip when the Criterion disc comes out. I'm assuming I'll get it for under $15. That's my limit unless it's a new release that I really want.

Re: Brazil (Universal) - 7/12/2011
Universal almost always releases big-name titles themselves first. Back in the DVD days they did this for Brazil, Spartacus, Army Of Darkness, etc.
They get a boost in sales from the general public, then they license it out for a special edition. Probably not a bad business model.
