I don't mind the cover/poster art but I"m sure the average person will not understand wtf that movie is cuz it's so weird looking based off the cover.
On a personal note...I've always have felt weird about that piece of art. Not sure if I like it or not. I accept it for what it is and that's fine, it's a good illustration. I feel it in it's fucked way represents the movie well...just....something about the actual design artistically speaking bothered me. Anyone ever felt weird about it artistically speaking?

i will consider this based on PQ - i have the nonanamorphic CC set and an anamorphic replacement for the first disc in the set. if priced around $15-17 on release and is the DC, i will pick it up and pick up the CC when released.

It's basically the same as the cover used for the Universal DVD:
http://www.amazon.com/Brazil-Jonatha...dp/0783225903/
I wonder if Universal and Criterion have some agreement about the different cover art for each release. With Fear and Loathing, Universal has basically the same cover art for the DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray, while Criterion used the same alternate cover art for their DVD and Blu-ray releases.
Well, none of the different poster/cover art for this film really show what this movie is about, and are almost all weird looking in some way.
I do like the "bursting brain" cover art, but maybe that's because it's what was used on the first copy I owned on this movie (VHS copy of US Theatrical Cut).

A barebones Universal BR of this is better than no Blu-Ray at all. I will pick this up to tide me over. If and when a Criterion Special Edition is released, I may end up getting it as well. I sold my old Criterion DVD set for $40 when I was clearing out a lot of my old DVDs. It's a great set but was difficult to watch considering it was non-anamorphic and although most will disagree with me, I thought many of the special features had little rewatchability. But I'd like to revisit these if they are released in HD.

Just a warning: several reviews have stated that this Blu-ray is not the Final Directors Cut that's on the Criterion releases and previous Universal DVD, but the American Theatrical Cut of the film.

I was under the impression that's the only cut Universal has the rights to.

Re: Brazil (Universal) - 7/12/2011
What Universal may not have had was a quality HD transfer of the Final Director's Cut. They may have transferred the American Theatrical Cut to HD for broadcast on HDTV channels, and so decided to use what they already had on hand for this Blu-ray release.
Ironically, this may make the Universal Blu-ray more desirable from a collector's/film enthusiast point of view if/when a Criterion Blu-ray is released. If the potential Criterion still only has the Final Director's Cut and Love Conquers All cut, then the Universal Blu-ray would be the only place to get the American Theatrical Cut in HD.
Personally, I'm hoping Criterion goes all out with the Blu-ray and puts the American, European, and Final Director's cut all on one disc with seamless branching, a la the Blade Runner Blu-ray set. The Love Conquers All cut may possibly be available only in SD, as it was assembled as a P&S TV cut with commercial breaks.

Re: Brazil (Universal) - 7/12/2011
Since I would suspect that the Criterion release would probably use the same cuts they released on DVD, that DOES make Universal's release that much more interesting to me, from a collector's point of view.
With that said, I will wait to see what Criterion offers with their eventual release before I make any purchases...

...I thought the cut we did get on the CC DVD was the TC? *looking it up* Well I'll be damned. I've never seen the TC cut in that case. so..it's a 132 mins. cut and the Gilliam cut is 142 mins., right?

- The US theatrical cut is 132 minutes.
- The European theatrical cut is 142 minutes.
- The "Love Conquers All" TV cut is 94 minutes and radically re-edited from start to finish.
- The Final Director's Cut is 142 minutes. This is mostly the same as the European theatrical cut, but with a few minor tweaks that Gilliam wanted to make.
The US theatrical cut was previously available on VHS and Laserdisc, but not DVD.
Universal's DVD edition listed the 132 minute running time on the packaging, but was really the 142-minute cut. I believe it was the Final Director's Cut, not the European cut.
The Final Director's Cut premiered with the Criterion Laserdisc box set, which also included the "Love Conquers All" TV cut (as an extra). Both of Criterion's DVD sets have been ports of the Laserdisc content. Criterion has never released either theatrical cut.
The new Blu-ray is the US theatrical cut.

20th Century Fox is scheduled to release a Blu-ray of Brazil in the UK Oct 24, 2011. The assumption is that this will be the European Theatrical Cut:

For $15 - not a bad deal at all, Had to go to a different BB than usual but got it with the coupon. The CSR actually handed me the coupon back and told me I can use again if I wanted. Saved me some printer ink.

Re: Brazil (Universal) - 7/12/2011
The most substantial cut in the US version is near the end of the film. When Sam is arrested and "bagged" at his mothers house (in the European and Final Cut) the film proceeds with a scene of him being processed and charged, then has a scene where Mr. Helpmann dressed as Santa Claus visits him in his jail cel, and then we cut to the famous pull back shot of Sam in the interrogation room. The US cut goes straight from arrest to "the pull back shot" cutting out a big 5-6 minute chunk.

No Brazil at my BB. They said they didn't care it, but the story 20 minutes away did. When I said I'll just grab it off Amazon, the CSR freaked out and started telling me how badly CA needed the taxes etc. WTF?

....I'm assuming you meant "they didn't carry it, but the store 20 mins. away did." OR "they didn't care for it, but the store 20 mins. away did." Either way is plausible.
