http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Das-Boot-Blu-ray/20919/
No announcement or specs yet. List price is $34.95, which means this could be a digibook release. Amazon Pre-order - June 7 The Digital Bits: The 2-disc set will officially include the Director's Cut of the film, newly-remastered for high-def, along with the Theatrical Cut as well. You'll also get 3 hours of all-new BD-exclusive special features, including director's commentary with Peterson, a new retrospective documentary of the making of the film (Wolfgang Petersen: Back to The Boat), 2 Going Deeper featurettes (Maria's Take and The Perfect Boat), 7 Captain's Tour featurettes that take you around the sets (Rooms Overview, Entry Conning Tower, Torpedo Room & Crew Quarters, Captain's & Officers' Rooms, The Control Room, Petty Officers' Room & Galley and Diesel & Electric Motor Rooms), 2 vintage featurettes (including a 1981 Behind the Scenes and the 1983 Battle for the Atlantic), a German-language radio program, theatrical trailers and more! |
Re: Das Boot: Director's Cut - 6/7/11
This is beyond excellent.
And what a coincidence...I just watched In the Line of Fire on BD last night. I compared the BD special features to the DVD and found the only items of any consequence they left off the BD release were some trailers, one of which was for Das Boot DC. I played that trailer and thought, "Hmmmm, great movie. Wonder when the Blu-ray will come out?" This is developing as an expensive spring. |

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Re: Das Boot: Director's Cut - 6/7/11
Sweetness, indeed! Will be a good excuse to watch this again.

Re: Das Boot: Director's Cut - 6/7/11
I assume the bluray won't have those annoying yellow subtitles that the DVD has.

Also there should be no more flipping over the disc, only to have the second half of the movie start right up with the English-dubbed soundtrack playing (which is annoying if you've been watching the original German up to that point). |

Hopefully not. Give me new, white subtitles please.

Good news...

Yellow subtitles are great! I can't tell you how much I hate subtitles that blend in with the movie and make it hard to read. Yellow is a great choice for contrast. I'm not sure what the problem is.

Great news. I'll assume this will not include the theatrical cut? But damn, hearing this in DTS-HD will hopefully be quite an amazing thing.

The real question is if this will be the Das Boot Edition!

Re: Das Boot: Director's Cut - 6/7/11
Just noticed the full specs posted at the top of this thread. This sounds like an incredible package. Don't see how anyone who admires this film could not be interested.
I've never actually seen the theatrical cut (I assume this is referring to the 2.5-hour version that played in theatres circa 1981 or so)? I have the director's cut and the full miniseries on DVD. |

Sweet

Re: Das Boot: Director's Cut - 6/7/11
Yellow subtitles are better than white because white will often get hidden against a white background (of which there are many in life). But they are harsh in dark scenes. I think they should use a white font with a thin black border. Solves both problems.

Hoping this is in identical-styled packaging to "Bridge on the River Kwai," so they'll match on the shelf.
