Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

I just want to see The Hot Chick get released on Blu-Ray, maybe the unreleased R-rated version? I would really like that, it's one of my favorites.
The movie looks amazing on Starz HD. Even if the blu-ray has NO special features it'll be fine - I bought Just Friends on Blu-Ray and it just plays on a loop and i still enjoyed its release. I paid $15 for it too! :P

Sweet. Camp Nowhere.

I remember there being a lot of controversy about this when I was growing up as it was quite anarchistic. My mother would not let me see it. Had to eventually see it on VHS at a friends' house.

The funny thing is that dad regularly took me to see things like Terminator 2 and Robocop. When I was 6-10yrs old.

Camp Nowhere has seen more love in this thread than the seventeen years it has been out.

I just realized that I saw this movie in theaters and realized how old I'm getting.

The August 30th date could be just a Canadian exclusive or some other retailers exclusive date as Mill Creek is starting to add them on their site and they all have October 11 listed for the street date.

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

According to Mill Creek's website; only Aspen Extreme, Camp Nowhere, Disorganized Crime and Indian Summer are set for a Blu-ray release on October 11th. That's only four of the eleven titles that are hitting Canada on August 30th.

All four titles however do list 2.0 surround sound (no word if they're lossy or lossless), but all will be in their OAR (as Aspen Extreme and Indian Summer show 2.35:1 on their sell sheets).

I don't think any of those were released theatrically with 5.1 sound- Camp Nowhere was the only one that even came out after Dolby Digital and DTS were in theaters (I was a projectionist at the time but the theater I worked at didn't get that movie- I have the laserdisc and there's no AC-3 track on that.)

Maybe just slow to add them (I don't think they added the others this early so that is an improvement already). They all should be coming sooner than later any way.

Wasn't Aspen Extreme 1.85:1 though?

They haven't retained the native 5.1 track for a release yet have they (and there were a couple of opportunities)?

Boys, Camp Nowhere, Funny Bones and The Wrong Guy from this batch might have been native 5.1 tracks (not sure on Camp Nowhere). Only Boys and Funny Bones were 5.1 on the DVD.

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

Aspen Extreme was 1.85- I remember because it was one of the first laserdiscs I rented and watched on a $10 flea market player that barely worked! Otherwise it's a pretty forgettable movie. (Main reason I dumped VHS in favor of laserdiscs- hardly anything on VHS was letterboxed, while nearly every new title on laserdisc was, even crap movies like this!)

Not sure if Camp Nowhere is in need of an upgrade, although it does have a young Jessica Alba in it...

Mill Creek has updated the aspect ratio on the Aspen Extreme sell sheet now. It will be 1.85:1.

I don't know about Camp Nowhere. Both the Laserdisc and DVD had Dolby Surround 2.0 tracks. IIRC, the end credits listed the film as having a Dolby Surround Spectral Recording track.

Not all of their listings have them but, for the ones that do, just click the sell sheet link to load if you have Adobe Reader.

Eg. http://www.millcreekent.com/indian-summer-blu-ray.html

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

Updated the OP with more confirmed technical specifications about the discs.

I finally own my first Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray, Camp Nowhere. For six bucks, I can't beat a serviceable 1080p transfer. As a guilty pleasure of mine, it sucks it never saw any bonus-feature on DVD or Blu-ray as there were tons of deleted scenes in the trailer and television spots that will most likely be seen by nobody.

I've seen handful of the Mill Creek Buena Vista releases at Fry's, Target, Wal-Mart and Zia's located across the city. However, I haven't seen any of the latest releases (October 11th) anywhere. I ended up just purchasing Camp Nowhere via Amazon (where it's currently $5.99).

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

It has been a really long time since they've released any of these but finally some more (none of the ones I really want but a couple of guilty pleasure types for me).

All for May 15th (though maybe they will pop up early). The Mill Creek site seems to list all as having 5.1 tracks (except White Squall so that better be an error). Quickly looking, all the 2.39:1 aspect ratio films seem to be accurate. Doesn't appear as previous extras will be retained for White Squall and Duets but they mention theatrical trailers and alternate language options (seems like they have made some effort in improving quality lately).

D.O.A. (1988)
New York Stories (1989)
Born Yesterday (1993)
Terminal Velocity (1994)
Before and After (1996)
Mr. Wrong (1996)
White Squall (1996)
Gone Fishin' (1997)
Holy Man (1998)
Duets (2000)

Still no sign of the cancelled releases from last August. The Wrong Guy, Funny Bones and Crossing the Bridge were pretty decent films too.

Re: The Mill Creek Buena Vista Blu-ray Bargain Bonanza Appreciation Thread

I'm in for Terminal Velocity & White Squall!

TM is a fun 90's action flick (dvd is a horrible non anamorphic letterbox release) and WS will be another Ridley Scott title to add to the directors blu collection. I guess that leaves Duelists, Someone to watch over me and 1492 left!

A poster on horrordvds.com is reporting that 5/15/12 will also bring a double feature of The Grand Duel (1972) & Keoma (1976).
