Re: James Bond Update
Is there anyone here that doubts it's being discontinued to be reissued in more shelf-friendly packaging? Seriously. This isn't going OOP anytime soon.

So they set a record and discontinue it?
Fox: ‘Bond 50’ Best-Selling Blu-ray Box Set in 2012
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Dec. 13 said Bond 50 is the top-selling Blu-ray Disc box set of 2012, with projected worldwide sales totaling $50 million to date.
The 23-disc collection features all 22 classic films in 1080p resolution for the first time with more than 122 hours of bonus features. The box set was released on Sept. 24 in the United Kingdom and Sept. 25 in North America; additional international markets followed through October.
“The Bond franchise is alive and stronger than ever as evidenced by the spectacular sales of the Bond 50 box set,” Michael Brown, EVP of marketing with MGM, said in a statement. “It has become an instant collector’s item and a must have for any Bond fan this holiday season.”
The box set release was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of the Bond franchise this year. The yearlong campaign, which launched globally in January at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, included an exhibit of Bond vehicles at San Diego Comic-Con, the re-release of Dr. No in U.S. movie theaters and a Roger Moore International press day before culminating with the “007 Days of Bond: the Blu-relay Tour” throughout the U.K.

Discontinuing it isn't the same as recalling it. It just means they aren't manufacturing any more, at least in the current iteration. They may have plenty of copies in the pipeline for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't be surprised if they re-release it next year to include "Skyfall." They could still call it "50 years of Bond" because that's the span covered by the movies.

Sorry, there was PLENTY of time & opportunity to nab this set at a good price before it got discontinued, which it's record sales bear out. Kinda' weak sauce to complain about it now. Also, it only makes sense that the "50 year" set is only available during said 50th year.

Re: James Bond Update
on blu ray.com someone from aussie showed a picture of their new bond set. the company did away with the book format and replaced it with a cardboard slipcase and one thick blu ray case with spindles to hold all the movies + skyfall when it comes out + the bonus disc
maybe this is what they are doing with the bond set here

Re: James Bond Update
I saw 2 issues why some people in this forum didn't want to buy the set:
1) Problem with the packaging/Lack of shelf space.
2) Already have too many of the Bond BDs and only needed a select few to complete the series.
Price didn't seem to be an issue. Hell, even when it dropped to $99, there were still a few here who didn't want to buy the set because of the packaging.

The people not wanting the set because of size haven't seen it in person. Sure, it's long, but it's far from bulky for a 23 discs set.
If you place it face-first, 23 BD cases would actually take more room.

Stopped by local Target in Saltlake on Thur and picked up Tomorrow Never Dies. But A View to a Kill & The Living Daylights were out of stock. So I am still missing 3 titles. The other one is Diamonds Are Forever from Walmart.

Re: James Bond Update
When you've collected movies forever, you'd rather have consistency in packaging. (Even with the original Bond Box sets, they don't have to be placed open-faced on a shelf.)
The only set I have like this is the Mel Brooks set, and if I had known two years ago that they would release a slim case box set, I would have waited. (I specifically bought the individual Planet of the Apes discs because of this horrible packaging.)

I betting most of those people, like me, don't want the set because it wont fit on a shelf, depth wise, other than being open faced.

Hell, I didn't even put the Bond box with the other Blu-rays. I put it on the shelf next to my Bond books.

I collect a lot of complete TV series, so odd packing is a norm for me. Bond 50 is smaller than most of those sets.

Re: James Bond Update
I've got the IKEA Billy shelving, which is quite deep, so I don't really care how long DVD/blu boxes are. This thing is petite compared to some of those big WB boxsets (Ben Hur is a BEAST)
I wonder if they'll split it back into the weird "nanner nanner, you need to buy 5 sets to get all the Connery films" releases? Honestly, if you missed this set for $99 or even $129 this holiday season and love Bond, you done goofed. I love it.

Re: James Bond Update
The case does make a difference to me. I have a large collection and I have six 8-foot shelving sections mounted on my wall. The shelf brackets require me to leave gaps between some of the movies, so dealing with big boxes like this is just a constant annoyance as I phase in new movies (yes they're alphabetical). Even the older Hitchcock velvet box caused problems. The new Hitchcock set takes up about 2 inches for 15 movies. That's nice.
So even though the Bond 50 set was the better deal, I just picked up a few of the individual discs instead. I already had 5 or 6 of the movies so in the long run if I ever want them all I'll just wait until they're under $10 each again.
