Weinstein Company buys 25 percent stake in Starz media
And before we get to the title announcement news, here's the big story today: Starz has sold a 25% equity stake in Starz Media to The Weinstein Company, in exchange for which Weinstein and Starz' Anchor Bay have entered into a multi-year agreement to for DVD, Blu-ray and digital distribution of Weinstein catalog films. This will include up to 20 Weinstein and Dimension titles per year, including new films like The King's Speech, Blue Valentine and Company Men. Other films to be released include Sarah's Key, the Scream, Spy Kids and Scary Movie franchises, and new installments of the Halloween, Hellraiser and Children of the Corn series, among other titles. Very good news indeed!
The digital bits is reporting that The Weinstein's have purchased 25 percent stake in Starz media. based on what is being reported it is sounding like we will be seeing domestic bluray releases of Halloween 6, H20 and Hallowen resurection. Not to mention the scream and scary movie series being released by Anchor Bay.
This is awesome news especially in regards to the Halloween films.
People have been saying for years they would love to see the dimension halloween titles distributed by anchor bay, based on the love that they have shown Halloween, and Halloween 4 & 5.

That's awesome news. Now Anchor Bay needs to release the rest of the Halloweens on BD. Universal still owns the rights to 2 and 3 though.

I would love for me a Halloween Box from Anchor Bay with all the movies they have access to now AND the extras they left out of there original Blu-Ray of Halloween (with the TV version & Original version on 1 disc) plus the 25 Years of Terror documentary.
Now we can also get a almost complete Hellraiser box set also

Other titles include the Kristin Scott Thomas drama Sarah’s Key, upcoming sequels in the successful Scream, Spy Kids, and Scary Movie franchises, and new installments in the Hellraiser, Halloween, and Children of the Corn film series.

Odd that Universal would cling to Season of the Witch considering it hardly falls in line with the rest of the franchise and isn't even a good movie.

Doesn't that actually include those films??

Per Wikipedia:
"All films released by Dimension Films prior to October 1, 2005, remain the property of Miramax Films."
That means this deal would NOT include the already released Halloween and Hellraiser sequels

TWC are distributing ALL of the Miramax/Dimension catalog as mentioned two weeks ago.
THEREFORE Anchor Bay will now be the distributor for TWC/Miramax/Dimension titles.

The 1st batch consists of Nine, the underperforming Rob Marshall-directed musical, A Single Man, The Road, Youth in Revolt, Halloween, Piranha 3-D, Nowhere Boy, Hoodwinked 2, and Blue Valentine, the latter that Ryan Gosling-Michelle Williams drama acquired by TWC last month at Sundance. The 2nd package of 10 films will encompass the next batch of TWC releases.

I'm curious to how long Sony gets to hold onto the rights from those select few TWC titles they released.
Vivendi's deal, who knows how that went down and how long of a deal they agreed too. Maybe with Anchor Bay at the helm we will get a Grindhouse release with uncompressed audio.
I'm curious to see how the Starz/Anchor Bay relationship goes. Starz has slowly been catching up to Showtime and HBO to be that dominant player, especially now as they own their own home media distribution (Anchor Bay), their own theatrical distribution (Overture and Anchor Bay), and VOD (their partnership with Netflix).

Oh geez.
It's just not TWC's home distribution that is wacky, look at what films weren't theatrically released by them either, but instead in a deal done with MGM:
Lucky Number Slevin
Clerks II
School for Scoundrels
Stormbreaker
Killshot
Breaking and Entering
Black Christmas
Bobby
Factory Girl
Miss Potter
Arthur and the Invisibles
Hannibal Rising
The Ex
1408
Who's Your Caddy?
The Nanny Diaries
Halloween
The Mist
Crossing Over
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
The Forbidden Kingdom saw its theatrical release through Lionsgate rather than TWC. MGM purchased the rights off Igor from TWC thinking they had a hit on their hands. The director of All Good Things purchased the rights after the Weinsteins did nothing with the film and sold them to Magnolia. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane still sits in distribution limbo.

Something not answered yet: How does the Weinstein Company have money to buy anything right now? I thought they were dead broke?

Re: Weinstein Company buys 25 percent stake in Starz media
so, I could possible get some more Halloween on blu?
If anchor bay has their hand in it, then maybe (althought unlikely), we'll finally get a legit release of the H6 Producer's cut?
