Red Down due in November in UK.
MGM in 2012 thus far:
January-Spellbound,Rebecca,Notorious,Annie Hall,Manhattan,The Apartment
February-It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,Throw Momma from the Train,Casino Royale
June- Missing in Action 1&2,The Delta Force,Hoosiers
July-Lone Wolf McQuade,Code of Silence
August-Death Wish 2-4,WarGames
September-Bond 50,Jeepers Creepers(?),Killer Clowns From Outer Space(?)
October-The Princess Bride
November-Red Dawn(?)
Very weak compared to previous year.

I agree.
All the more surprising because the year started off with such a bang.
The January releases were so good- so many Five Star Classics, that it's almost enough to make up for the drought of better stuff since then.
Hopefully they'll kick out some quality titles in Q3 and Q4, but the trajectory I'm seeing doesn't look promising to me.
I sure wouldn't mind a Dr Phibes release (what I really crave is a Planet Of The Vampires upgrade) but Jeepers Creepers and Killer Klowns (along with the Chuck Norris and weaker Bronson flicks) sound like they are going after a different demographic.

I wish they would've kept the original Breakfast Club ripoff poster from TCM2, instead of trying to make it look like something out of the Saw series. That's what drew me to it in the video store when I was younger.

Indeed. After such a brilliant start,i expected from them to finally get around and release classics such as Mississippi Burning,In The Heat Of The Night,Marty,Witness for the Prosecution,Judgment at Nuremberg, the rest of the Pink Panther series, more Woody Allen etc etc. Moreover they putting out three mediocre horrors in Sept and inexplicably still refusing to bring out cult classics such as The Howling,The Fog,From Beyond,Lifeforce. They are already through October with announcements,we shall see what they left for us for Q4

Not nuts about the KK art, but I can live with it. Ditto on TCM 2. But what I really care about is having both of these gems on BD. Stoked!
I believe so, yes. Don't forget Synapse has Countess Dracula coming at some point as well.

Kind of silly to call these horror films mediocre and then in the same breath call out for Lifeforce and Howling blurays, no?
I'm a fan of all of them but let's not get carried away here.

The Howling's FX work was done by Rob Bottin. If that ain't reason enough for a BD release, then fuck if I know what is.

NoirFan, is that an Australian release?
How's it look? I read it has the same/similar transfer to the German BD release.

It's all a matter of taste.IMO,Howling and The Fog are much superior than TCM 2 or JC.Howling-classic,JC-mediocre,etc.No hard feelings dude.

When I posted on Twitter that Killer Klowns from Outer Space was getting a Blu-ray release two weeks ago, I had numerous responses from people genuinely excited. Some I expected, others I didn't. Hell, I know I'm purchasing it day one because it's a classic from my childhood.
Hell, if MGM wants to release Tobe Hooper's Invaders From Mars on the same day, I'd do the exact same thing.

I bought WITCHFINDER GENERAL five years ago and have never had a chance to watch it.
So I'll double down: I want WITCHFINDER GENERAL on BR.
Also, I'd love to get Corman's FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER since the colors in high def would be fantastic.

That's the Australian disc, and I thought it looked pretty solid. It was rather pricey, $38 shipped or something like that, but it's my favorite horror film, so I didn't mind splurging. As I watch it roughly once a month or so, I've gotten my money's worth. Still haven't gotten around to the featurette though.

Like I said I'm a fan of the Howling, was just stating that Killer Klowns has just as big of a fanbase and its silly to act like one is more deserving of a bluray release than the other.
I'm a pretty big Joe Dante fan btw, even contributed money to his Trailer From Hell campaign on kickstarter last month.
I'd much rather get The Burbs or Matinee on bluray before the Howling though.

The image is somewhat soft at times, but I chalked that up to the period and the budget. Overall, I was generally pleased with the transfer. It's not a reference-quality representation, but a faithful one. I stuck the Blu-ray and the MGM SE DVD in one 2-disc black case to create my own deluxe set, which is likely as good as it'll get for this film, as MGM seems to have no interest in releasing it in HD here.

I don't know what planet The Howling is considered one of the best horrors of all time, certainly not this one. It's not even the best werewolf movie from 1981. Like I said, I'm a pretty big fan of the movie but its not without its flaws.
I am region-free but didn't know this existed. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: MGM Catalog Releases (2011-2013)
Someone who I believe has some association with MGM home video posted this on one of the horror film boards recently when the subject came up
So it would seem that Howling was at least being considered for release.
Personally, Howling means more to me than anything from the 90's or Aughts. Partly it's a generational thing. Were I ten or fifteen years younger I'm sure I would be all over these releases (or even more likely, getting them off torrent sites )
But when you discuss generational aspects, the Howling has significance to me because it's one of the films I view as that last gasp of the monsterkid culture of the 60's and 70's. This is the culture that grew up on Aurora Model kits, Famous Monsters magazine, the Marvel monster comics craze of the early 70's, Shock Theater, and on and on. Joe Dante was a monsterkid and the film is filled with references to this from the Forry Ackerman and Dick Miller scene to all the in jokes and classic universal call backs. I don't see it as 'just a werewolf movie'.
I've always thought it was crafty and well made- but the sentimental associations after 30 years make it a damn near indispensable library title to me now.
Fortunately the dvd holds up well for the time being. I just watched it again last year and had a fine ole time with it. I look forward to someday experiencing the film again with that extra little bump in precision and clarity- but I'm happy to have a strong DVD in the meantime. Fully packed too.
As for THE HOWLING, we looked at an existing HD master made by another rights holder and it was terrible--the color was all wrong. Fans would not have been happy.
