New wave of Universal catalog releases

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases
The Mockingbird digibook is very nice. I like that Universal prints the specs on the actual book instead of slapping a piece of paper on the back the way WB does with theirs. I expect that E.T. and Jaws will both have standard and digibook releases. The previous 2-disc Jaws DVD set had that nice photo book in it. I could see them re-using that for a digibook version.
I am also very excited about the monster films. I wouldn't mind if they gave us a nice box set of them like they did with the original dvd collection. But I'll take them however they're presented.

Super annoying that the Universal Blu-ray is missing so many of the features from the Studio Canal Blu-ray, but the transfer sure looks pretty good, to this untrained eye at least.

I believe that's because SC produced their own extras, and Universal opted not to license them. It's a shame, since by all accounts, the extras are quite good.

The transfer for The Deer Hunter is atrocious! Compare the one Blu-Ray to the other! Universal's DNR obsession has not changed.

Per blu-ray.com, if you have the old Out of Africa BD with the dreadful transfer, there is now an exchange program in place where you can exchange it for the remastered disc.
See the link for details. You send the disc only, not the packaging.
It's not clear if you will get back just the new BD, or the whole digibook package.

I think it's most likely that complaints about the lack of an exchange program shamed Universal into establishing one.

This should answer your question:

On Tuesday, Steven Spielberg appeared in LA after a screening of a new digital print of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The print was created from the same new master files that will ultimately be used to create a Blu-ray release. And in a move that will likely delight fans, he expressed regret over alterations made to E.T. a few years ago, where guns were digitally replaced with walkie-talkies, and says that the Blu-ray release of that film will be the original 1982 version. His comments also suggested that the few digital tweaks made to Raiders of the Lost Ark for its 2003 DVD release might also be rolled back.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases
I watched Tintin the other day, and I see that with my purchase I got BD, DVD, iTunes download, UltraViolet download, and Ultraviolet stream of this movie. Seems a bit excessive, but I registered them anyway. I don't know who actually uses all these formats though.

The different digital formats are meant to cover the bases for whatever version you need, like the 2 different disc formats. It's too bad there isn't a single standard.
