New wave of Universal catalog releases

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=5266

American Graffiti
Babe
A Beautiful Mind
Billy Madison
The Birds
Blue Crush
The Blues Brothers
Dazed and Confused
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Happy Gilmore
National Lampoon's Animal House
Out of Sight
Ray
To Kill a Mockingbird

I think the only two on this list I have absolutely no interest in are Blue Crush and Ray (although, I've just never seen Ray, and I'll probably never be compelled enough to own A Beautiful Mind, given that I think Cinderella Man is a much better movie and I haven't even bought that yet).

All the HD-DVDs of these films were generally great/good/okay/acceptable? No distressingly awful anomalies?

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

I'm actually in for Blue Crush!

Anyone know if Universal is still just re-packaging their HDDVD titles, or if they've done anything different for the blu-rays?

In for Fast Times and possibly Dazed, depending on the price of each (under $15)

Universal's Flashback Edition DVD has always existed alongside the Criterion, so it doesn't mean anything.

The fact that no Universal titles (or very little, I'm not sure) have been released on Blu-ray by Criterion certainly means something though.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

Some of these are really old BD transfers. A few were due out in 2008 so they might be dnred/eeed. Few good titles.

I doubt it will look any better than the Alliance release that's been available. Probably will get the special features, but they're 2 stars worth, so it's not a big deal.

Hopefully they just look good. Most of these aren't catalogs I'm looking for to blow me away, just look solid.

Blue Crush is a terrific guilty pleasure movie and Out of Sight is one of the most underrated films that I own. It's top notch and most people that I know have never seen it.

Does anybody know what a wave means? Are these the majority of Universal's catalogs for 2011, the first half of the year or are these likely first quarter releases?

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

Just random titles from a poll I think. Half that list is titles delayed from the past 2.5 years

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

Just give me the theatrical cut of The Blues Brothers, I don't want the extended version.

Not really. Criterion wants to put the effort in on every title, and it's not like you see Criterion Blu-Rays of all their big releases, just a select few. So far we have Charade and Videodrome, I'm sure more will follow.

I thought I heard the HD-DVD was good. And the extras are pretty good, in my book. At least 3.5, but this is in reference to the 2-disc set, not the 1-disc. The HD-DVD had all the extras from the 2-disc set.

The last DVD, the 25th Anniversary with the white cover and double-sided disc, is the only time the TC has been available on DVD (maybe on home video ever...?). If you've ever watched the movie on DVD, odds are extremely high you saw the longer version.

Hopefully BB will have both cuts like the 25th anniversary DVD did. The extended cut is better for the longer musical numbers.

If nothing else, Universal almost always upgrades the audio to lossless for their HD DVD ports.

They generally recycle the same old video masters, but will re-encode the compression, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

Most of these titles looked fair-to-average on HD DVD.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

I am probably the only one who cares, but I hope they get some damn consistency and put the "swoosh" thing back on the bottom of their front covers. Their most recent releases have been very random as to which ones have it, and some haven't had it at all. I really like the uniformity between Universal titles in that respect, and I really hope they go back to it.

Re: New wave of Universal catalog releases

To Kill a Mockingbird should be fantastic on BD, but I wouldn't rule out Universal finding some way to screw it up.
