Studio Canal has the UK rights to Mulholland Drive.

However, Universal appears to have licensed some of the other titles from different studios (Lost Highway and Fire Walk With Me from MK2, for example). I guess they just couldn't come to terms with Studio Canal.

- Lost Highway (Region B only, it appears)
- Twin Peaks: FWWM (Region B only, it appears)

Some bad news; according to posts on blu-ray.com's forums, the box set coming out tomorrow has the following demerits:

* Despite the back cover saying all films are 1080p, it appears that Fire Walk with Me and Lost Highway are 1080i
* Only Dune and Blue Velvet have 5.1 sound; the rest are 2.0 (and for some bizarre reason, the films 2.0-only sound are the only ones with subtitles)

Eraserhead is actually the one most likely to get a US release. David Lynch owns that one himself, and has been involved in the HD remaster that's been released in foreign markets. He just needs a domestic distributor, which I'm sure he'll find soon enough. The other titles are tied up in ownership by several different studios, with different distributors in different territories.

Not just that, but they're 1080i at 50 Hz, which means that they have PAL-style 4% speed-up.

Has anyone been able to confirm 100% if the UK version of Mulholland Dr. suffers from audio issues? I think it was discussed in this thread, but some were skeptical...

edit: somehow I missed it on page one of this thread. Silly me. I have this disc (as well as [REC]3) on the way. :)

I want a US release of Eraserhead more than any other title. Eraserhead and the Criterion Brazil box and I might never even bother buying another blu-ray again.

Yes, Eraserhead seems likely to be headed for a Criterion release.

dont know but Australian releases of TP:FWWM and Lost Highway are ports of the french MK2 discs.

Also, Josh, thank you for confirming the mastering error on the 5.1 track on the old Universal blu, I've been wanting confirmation of that for ages!!

Oh, right, yeah. I actually didn't find that too bothersome overall. I can see how some people may not notice it at all, but it's definitely there and definitely shouldn't be. In a few scenes, the dialogue is echo-y. (Same problem as the recent Star Trek TNG fiasco.)

Could someone tell me what currently are the best versions of each of Lynch's films for someone in the US? I just bought the 3-film box set from Germany that includes Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire. But what about the rest? I know Blue Velvet and Eraserhead are available in the US and FWWM is available as part of the Twin Peaks box set.

Of what's currently available, the best options are:

Eraserhead - Criterion Blu-ray (US).

The Elephant Man - UK/French Blu-ray.

Dune - The US Blu-ray is best (though I haven't seen a recent Japanese copy that claims to be remastered). Avoid anything from Germany or the UK. A French disc has some positives but the colors and contrast are off.

Blue Velvet - US Blu-ray is best. That's the only copy with the deleted scenes, which are a revelation.

Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me - The "Entire Mystery" box set (US).

Wild at Heart - Twilight Time Blu-ray (US).

Lost Highway - The European and Japanese Blu-rays are pretty equivalent. None are great. Avoid the UK copy, which is encoded at 1080i/50Hz.

The Straight Story - The only Blu-ray is from Japan. Picture quality is poor.

Mulholland Drive - Criterion Blu-ray (US). European Blu-rays are respectable, but the Criterion has slightly better picture quality and much better extras.

Inland Empire - Only available in Europe. All copies are comparable. Due to its terrible production values, this movie will never look good.

One correction:

Wild at Heart - Twilight Time Blu-ray (US).

This disc had the best audio/video, but it was a limited edition and is now sold out. UK and French Blu-rays have the same video, but a mastering error in the audio that causes dialogue to come out of all three front speakers. Some viewers find this more noticeable/distracting than others. (It echoes a little bit.)

Be careful if ordering from the UK. Some copies are encoded at 1080i/50Hz, and it's not easy to tell from retailer listings which is which. All of them are locked to Region B.

The French Blu-ray is also locked to Region B. It also changes all on-screen text to French.

Honestly, the Twilight Time copy was the best all-around disc. Hopefully, MGM will license the movie out to another distributor when Twilight Time's exclusivity license expires.

Is there any word yet on the new uk remaster of Mulholland Dr. that just came out? The criterion came out during the period when they were having real trouble with their encoding and the hope was that maybe the new uk disc would be an improvement.
