It honestly looks like something I would watch while on LSD. The trailers make it look MTV-style. I'm hoping it's not...hence the rental. Good word of mouth is the only reason I am watching this. The last blind buy I trusted the 'cool' posters with was Trick R Treat, and it was a piece of shit.

I saw this 5 times and will be buying it on day 1. Glad to see we're at least getting a quick turnaround since the movie fizzled at the box office.

Day one for me also.
I thought Universal's ads were awful, if I hadn't read the graphic novels and had only seen the ads for the movie I wouldn't of been interested in the movie at all.
Someone on another message board I go to had an excellent idea for TV spots, basically fake ads with the evil exes. For example you could have a fake ad for a Lucas Lee movie, a fake ad about being a vegan with Todd, a fake CD ad with the twins. At the end they would look at the screen and say something like "I'm coming for you Scott Pilgrim".
Maybe it wouldn't of gotten a huge increase in box office with ads like that, but I think they would of brought in more people then the awful ads Universal put out.

I think a 30 - 90 second trailer or tv spot is going to be a hard sell for this movie no matter how you change things up. The actors, dialog, and premise just aren't going to appeal to a wide demographic.

Sorry, I just don't understand how people watch a film so much in such a little time.

Well, is it safe to assume you don't have a girlfriend? I don't think I've ever seen a movie more then once in a Theater. But you saw it five times? Please tell me you work their and it's simply because you need to make sure the exit doors are locked because I can't fathom why anyone would see a movie five times in the short amount of time it had at the box office. I don't think I've even seen the same porn five times.

I've seen a handful of movies five times in theaters. Some I will admit to, like Serenity or The Girl Next Door. Others, let's just say I won't.

Or wait a month or two and release it in September or October.
Universal blitzed it towards the fanboys, however, their money was already a guarantee. Just like Serenity, they preached to the choir, but couldn't figure out how to get the mainstream on board. Everyone I know, fanboy or not, has loved the film; however, Universal marketed towards the video game crowd... well... that was a mistake because we saw how the box office turned out.
Don't get me wrong, it'll find its life on video; I just think Universal could've done a better job at marketing it regardless of the fact that it was a tough sale. I'm just happy they spent over $60 million on the film because no other studio would've ever done that.

I saw the movie like most of my friends did with sneak preview passes they gave out at the comic book stores.
The core group of buyers probably all saw the movie for free.

I finally saw it last week and I think I'm going to have to pick it up...eventually.
Two words: Michael. Cera.
Michael Cera is box office poison. While he was good in this, I think audiences are done with him, and the B.O. for Pilgrim proved it.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World >> 11/09/2010
This comes up a lot, but think about the math. I don't know how many free screenings there were, but say there were 100. An average theater holds...let's go with 200 people. If every one of those people in every screening had paid $10 for a ticket, that's a measly $200,000. Even if you think I'm low-balling and you double or triple that number, it's still insignificant.
Meanwhile, the movie opened on 2,818 screens with an average of 5 showings a day. Over a three day weekend, that adds up to 42,270 paid showings of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The potential audience for 42,270 screenings almost completely drained away by the people who caught 100 free showings...?
If the core audience caught the free preview screenings and were satisfied, then the movie was doomed for failure at the box office regardless.

I've seen many movies more than once though, I did use to work at a theatre growing up and when they were free, would see them more than once - the habit just stuck.... If you'd seen Scott Pilgrim, you'd understand why someone would want to see it more than once.

Saw it yesterday and loved it. Buying it day one for sure.
The marketing absolutely sucked. Not only did it not give you any reason to go see the movie, but they also gave up on it way too soon. It seems like they did a blitz way too early (like six months before it came out) and then did a short one-week run the week before it came out.
They could have taken it (in a light-hearted way) from the aspect of: "Every so often, a film comes a long that defines a generation...." I personally think the film (the story and method of movie-making) is a perfect representative of the current generation of teens – a lot like a movie like The Breakfast Club was in the 80s.

It's not - the trailers make it look a lot more hyperkinetic than it really is. Actually, while it does have some quick-cuts (ala, Hot Fuzz), they're mostly done for effect and not to mask any sort of deficiency in film making. It actually has more long fluid takes than most of your typical Hollywood movies.

The trailers turned me off. Like Funny People, Universal just can't cut a proper trailer.
But I'll give Scotty a chance. Hope I'm wrong since I like Cera.

If I were only allowed to own one of the Blu-ray titles released this year, it would be the Alien Anthology. But if I were allowed two, the second would be Scott Pilgrim without a doubt.

I almost never buy movies on the day of release but I will make an exception for this one. Edgar Wright deserves it, and I know I'll be happy watching this again the second I put it on to watch.
