In other news: the packaging for the new limited set is BRUTAL. I mean, it's really very pretty, very nicely designed from a visual standpoint, but you have to dig in to the VERY tight cardboard sleeve each movie is housed in with your index finger and thumb and PULL. Lolita wouldn't play for me at first until I noticed I'd left multiple smudge marks on the disc! And no, before anyone asks, I'm not overly greasy or anything!

Also, I have to say, even though it's good value for money, I'm really disappointed this set is essentially just repackaging of the already existing blu-rays with two new discs thrown in. The older releases could really have used new mastering...REALLY.

Perhaps I'm a little off-track for this thread, but can you or anyone else confirm that the Shining disc in the new set is identical to the original Blu-ray release and still has the messed up colors on Danny's toys and tennis ball? I continue to be surprised about how little attention that error receives, because it completely takes me out of the movie.

They came from Amazon today. Took a look at Lolita and the picture quality is great. I'd forgotten how cinematic the movie is.. even standing in my living room, the sights and sounds have the effect of making me feel like I'm in a theatre. Great disc.

Just popped in Barry Lyndon and haven't even gotten to any picture yet (I'll be back in a while to report on that)... but I noticed that they changed the WB logo at the beginning of the film. I seem to remember the old 70's style WB logo, that kind of drawn red and black logo that appears that the camera's pulling back through it, like below but not "television"-

http://ctva.biz/WarnerBrosTelevision_logo.JPG

I seem to remember the Barry Lyndon music starting over the 70's logo... now the logo is as below. Odd choice.

Is my memory serving me right?

Your memory is serving you fine. They replaced the logo. People on other forums have complained about it:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/foru...y#post_3815194

The original logo was designed by Saul Bass, who is famous for a lot of old logos, posters, and movie titles:

Here's the title screen you mean, I think:

Apparently, WB has been doing this to a lot of their older movies: replacing the logo.

Lame that they changed the logo. I wonder why they would alter the film like that. Not a deal breaker or anything because the quality of the film transfer is great, but annoying nonetheless. They better not ever touch that blue and white MGM logo on 2001. Interesting batch of logos there. I always wondered why AT&T's logo looks like the Death Star.

Never knew Saul Bass made those logos. Interesting.

It really sucks when they change the logos to update to current times. Disney did it too for Toy Story with the new castle. The original Pixar castle was a nice touch at the time of release. Not sure if Universal still replaces the old globe rotating with the overbearing new (well as of 1997) theme and CG Globe.

Plus there was some controversy over the Paramount logo for The Godfather if I remember right.

I never owned Barry Lyndon on DVD. Did it really have the old black/white/red Warner logo on it? I honestly don't think I've seen that at the start of any WB DVD or BD I've watched. Does anyone know any other titles that preserve it?

That Avery International logo looks like paper clips in a three-way.

God, WB are such morons

The butchered aspect ratios were bad enough but understandable... they can claim it's the 'theatrical ratio' even though the DVD aspect ratios clearly looked better.they dont wanna anger J6P again by not having his entire screen filled.

That logo in front of the 70s Kubrick films was classic, set the tone so well..

Then I get those amazon exclusives today of Lolita/Barry Lyndon, they just copied and pasted the DVD art from the early 2000s and photoshopped blu-ray over DVD, and the back incorrectly says 1.85.
anyone remember when they first announced the blu-ray set, it said Barry London on the box instead of Lyndon?
how many releases have we had of these kubrick sets... dvd set in 1999, remastered in 2001 and again in 2003, blu-rays/dvd re-packaged 'special editions' in 2008, box set now in 2011, and futureshop is rolling out steelbooks as well

Clearly WB is very interested in making as much money as they can off Kubrick but putting no effort into respecting his legacy.

Course it's nitpicking but taken as a whole it is just one insult after another to their greatest directors work

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

The studios are run by 24-year old Business School graduates who happen to have an uncle who's an agent or something. Has nothing to do with any actual passion for the art. Most of them are too young to give a crap or even remember seeing a new Kubrick film in a theatre. 'Nuff said.

I never heard that and wasn't born till much later to see the film on DVD...what was the problem exactly?

Yeah...I never saw TS much on VHS ,never had it on DVD, but I knew that new castle logo had to be done later. It just looked off...

I couldn't agree more. I received Barry Lyndon yesterday and the front of the case was smashed inward ruining the cover art. Then I notice they used one of those lame cases with the recycle logo cut out. The cover art was like tissue paper. I bet Weekend at Bernies or Troll 2 were given better treatment. WB should really be ashamed.

Here's a clue, Warners. TAXI DRIVER.

....ah....very interesting about the logos discussion there. I'll admit...MGM and UA bother me the most. UA specifically cuz it's too new looking to fit w/ an older film. Raging Bull for example is a culprit.

If "Barry Lyndon" and "Lolita" sold like "A Clockwork Orange" they would have had comparable releases. They don't.

I believe Clockwork Orange contains the 1970's era "red" Warner logo. Can someone confirm?

I also think that the Shining had the "red" logo, but the latest blu-ray replaces it with the blue sky and gold Warner shield logo. Can anyone confirm?

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

It's not just that Barry Lyndon had the old Warner Communications logo, but was also given an animated "zoom" treatment that was quite effective when accompanied by that opening music. It set the tone and is something I closely associated with Barry Lyndon....it was part of the movie. Warner needs to be informed that this kind of alteration is unacceptable.

Solid Snake 06-02-11 07:43 PM

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

yeah...regardless of what ANY studio thinks...opening logo IS part of the film experience. What if in our future Paramount and WB changed the logos on Benjamin Button? It's all about at times how it sets the mood and tone for the whole experience..it's the first small step of the film making a statement at times (if not all times)

Yea, gotta admit that I wouldn't mind that cover. :-)

The Digital Bits just ran a big list of catalog titles TBA for Blu this year and next, and included on that list are a 50th Anniversary Special Edition of Lolita and a 25th Anniversary Special Edition of Full Metal Jacket. Those, plus the possibility that Universal will let Criterion do a Spartacus Blu and the disc-damaging package all spell out "don't buy" to me.
