It's a simple equation, Warner:

new transfers = I will re-buy in a heartbeat

no new transfers = I will never re-buy, as long as my heart beats

Not sure how this slipped by, but Criterion released a new Blu-ray of Barry Lyndon taken from a "new 4K digital restoration" and in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Screencap comparisons show the new transfer adds height without cropping the sides.

Slipped by who?

It slipped by me at least. I mean, the Criterion Blu-ray was released October 2017, and nobody updated this thread.

It was discussed in the Criterion thread.

I'm sure it was, but not here.

I guess because they are WB releases.

Yes, sure whatever. You already deleted that explanation from a previous post, so you knew it was superfluous. I wasn't being critical when I said it "slipped by," and I'm sorry if you were personally offended by the implication. However, this is a previous discussion thread of Kubrick releases on Blu-ray, particularly of Barry Lyndon, and I felt the recent Criterion release was worth noting in this thread, especially in light of the aspect ratio change.

I don't see any other rationale for the adversarial tone of your posts.

They weren't on my end. Just saying it wasn't missed and it was discussed in another thread. But, ok. You are now my sworn adversary.

If that was your intention, it could've been achieved in fewer posts and a less challenging tone. But if you don't see that, whatever. I was trying to be helpful and note a development in a relevant thread. I didn't come here for an argument, so I'll stop arguing with you.

I suspect most Criterion releases, even when the title had threads like this one, are discussed in that thread rather that bringing old threads back from the dead.

But now that we're here, sadly this is one of times where I had not even watched the previous released blu-ray disc before buying the Criterion disc. Also recently happened whit the Breakfast Club.

The comparison of the WB and Criterion release on DVDBeaver shows very little difference.
Whatever difference I can see in the still images will probably be hard to notice during actual playback.

 That was going to be my contribution to the discussion.

One of a multitude now, annoyingly. Last year was full of purchases like that.

I upgraded for the extras knowing the picture quality wasn't going to be a huge improvement.

For me what made it worth mentioning its that it was a Criterion release. They seem only now to be releasing more titles that got a prior release on blu-ray only a year or two before. In the past I was used to buying Criterion titles that had never made it to blu-ray before they made it happen. At least here in the US.

Except for the thin black bars on both sides of the screen for the Criterion (the proper aspect ratio) versus no black bars for the WB (the slightly improper aspect ratio). On my screen it's fairly noticeable during playback.
