Hopefully, it's the original editions and not the godawful special editions which ruined my childhood. Anyone know?!?!?!?!?!

Nope, just lots of people talking about how much George Lucas sucks.

No we already know. That isn't stopping anyone from Lucas-bashing...

I find Lucas bashing to be far nerdier than gushing. And for being such a talentless clueless retard, he did pretty well for himself.

So did Forest Gump.

No, wait, that's wrong of me. Forest Gump at least could play ping pong really well.

I was kidding in my post above. I don't care for the special editions, but I enjoy STAR WARS enough to ignore the changes.

Who was calling Lucas a talentless, clueless retard?
Oh I get it. The same person that was saying Lucas raped his childhood...i.e. nobody.

Clueless retards may have been implied in a previous post, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't referring to Lucas.

It's pretty easy to become rich and famous with no discernable talent, look at Jersey Shore.

I always enjoyed Star Wars for what they were but was never a fanboy. The problem I had was with Lucas' self importance. The constant tampering, the changes he could make because technology allowed, not because they were actually better was annoying. I believe he did leave things out or made changes to his original vision. It happens in every freakin movie put out. Deleted scenes are there because as filming progressed reality set in and things had to be left out. George acts likes he's the only director and SW was the only project ever changed part way through production. At least the SE's allowed me to enjoy the films in the theaters wih my son the way I enjoyed them as a teenager. But as films they lose appeal every time I hear the term original vision

Star Wars is a cultural milestone and one of the most recognizable sagas/stories in the world

Jersey Shore is some bull**** that under 25s watch drunk and that the rest of the world has probably never heard of

Yeah, totally the same kind of success

I wasn't saying Lucas was devoid of talent, I was saying you don't need talent to be rich and famous. Jersey Shore is just an example of the reality TV stars that get famous for no tangible reason; a sex tape, having kids, having a big ass. A lot of people do those things.

Star Wars was the little engine that could. A low budget picture that became a juggernaut. George holds the merchandising marketing rights because no one thought they'd be worth anything.

But there are numerous examples. Smokey and the Bandit was also a low budget feature by a first time stunt man turned director. It came in second that year in box office and increased sales of Trans Ams so fast dealers were charging over sticker and still couldn't keep them on the lot. Years earlier a little TV show got cancelled, resurrected and became another worldwide franchise spanning 50 years. Star Trek is still printing money for Paramount.

George just seems to like playing the martyr. It seems that very little in the final version was his original vision, yet somehow it still gave him one of the most recognizable sagas/stories in the world. The unmolested original is what we remember from going to the theater and that always seems to be the one thing the fans can't have.

re: Star Wars

I'm eagerly awaiting the cover artwork and packaging for these Star Wars sets... maybe by June or July (Comic Con?) we'll see some goodies appear. For me, it would be neato if FOX went the ALIEN Anthology book format for all six movies. A box with Batman/Matrix/Star Trek series slimpaks might work too.

I would LOVE if this was in the same exact type of packaging as the Alien Anthology.

JS will not be remembered 50 years from now, George Lucas, and Star Wars will be remembered forever.

Doubtful. Star Wars was forgotten about a mere 3 years after Jedi came out because the marketing dept took a sabattical. Star Wars will be remembered as long as the marketing juggernaut that is Lucasfilm keeps operating.

re: Star Wars

I caught Return of the Jedi on Spike last night. It made me somewhat sad to see the SE version. I don't care for the prequels or its attempt to center the story around Darth Vader's redemption. The movies were always about the good guys staying good and winning. Luke was tempted but figured the "secret" out and stopped fighting. Anakin did make the right choice at the end, and he was rewarded by being "returned" as a Jedi.

Growing up and watching my copied off HBO version of Star Wars, I never thought Han was a murderer. He was about to get popped by Greedo. He did what he had to do. It was an old fashioned shootout - who could draw faster.

George can do whatever he wants his movies, fine. But he should care enough of about the original movies to ensure that are available for viewing and when they are released, they are released in the best form possible. His contempt for people wanting to see the movies they watched and enjoyed by releasing them in a sub-standard throwaway form (the non-anamorphic) version is plainly just spite.

On the contrary, if the period between Return of the Jedi and mid-90s resurrection of the franchise taught us anything, it's that the vacuum allowed fan adoration to evolve into near obsession and worship. It had become commonplace for fans to refer to the original movies as "The Holy Trilogy" without a trace of hyperbole. I was there in the early 90s when Timothy Zahn's novels and Dark Horse's Dark Empire comic series hit the market and the response everywhere I went was the same: "It's about time!" I never once heard anyone say, "Meh. Star Wars is old and I don't care anymore."

Forgotten by whom? Maybe several individuals, but not in general.

BTW, just read a page or 2....must be time for my annual post....

Glad I have the THX LDs so I can actually watch Star Wars.

re: Star Wars

Actually, part of the charm of Star Wars post-ROTJ was that it was relatively under-marketed. As opposed to Star Trek, which continued to live through progressively "worse" films and a new show that didn't exactly do that great for the fist few seasons. Star Wars was a commodity that had some cachet since people remembered the quality of ANH, ESB and to a lesser extent ROTJ.

Now, that equation has totally flipped. The cash cow that was Episode I (and its poor reception) turned a lot of people off. The fact that Episode II and III weren't that warmly received have further marginalized the brand, in my humble opinion.

thats my opinion, and I don't have any facts to back me up.

There was no new product available, but people still enjoyed the original trilogy on home video.

And although I completely missed it, there was apparently a window in the late 80's where classic star wars toys were being practically given away at flea markets, yard sales, etc.

I agree It's just another franchise now. Part of that is the fact the prequels didn't (couldn't?) measure up to the original trilogy, and part is the fact there are so many established properties now.
