And yet he is 'redeemed' when he murders someone worse than him- ostensibly to save the son just minutes earlier he was laboring mightily to kill himself. Does it really matter who shows up at the end, when the philosophical underpinings of it all are so full of horseshit? To argue it from any point other than wanting it simply for nostalgic reasons, makes any discussion look kind of foolish. No personal offense meant, as nostalgia, and historical reference, are as good a motives as any to want the original. But the fact that Lucas was goaded into making an issue of the original title (Revenge of The Jedi) and changed it, and then years later expended resources to make sure Greedo shot first because of the wrong message it might send to impressionable kids about one of the heroes- that all that is ultimately in the service of a six film saga about a (mostly) remorseless thug getting into Jedi Valhalla from one good deed at the end (which of course involves him having to murder someone else)- is quite bonkers. I won't even begin to get into the fact that throughout the six films, the emualted Jedi are all clueless, stupid, despotic, easily duped, and ultimately (even at the end of jedi) weak and ineffectual- and that the only way the biggest villain of the saga can be vanquished is when another villain offs him. So kids, the big moral lesson to be learned here is- try to manipulate someone else into doing your dirty work for you. That way they have to make all the sacrifices, and you get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Remember kids, that's the Jedi way. And don't do drugs! |
re: Star Wars
Regarding Anakin's redemption, I think this is one aspect where Lucas succeeded in establishing his fake religion. Our secular beliefs emphasize the punishment of wrong-doers; mercy might be offered, but it's at our discretion. Forgiveness is an abstract idea that's honesty beyond most of us; anyone who's ever had a spat with a girlfriend knows how that works. It's so confusing to us that it's actually offensive to some to think of the most despicable people enjoying a good afterlife. Yet, that's exactly what many real life faiths tell us; that we can overcome our litany of offenses to pass through the Pearly Gates.
No one wants to imagine a Heaven populated with Ted Bundy, Elizabeth Bathory or Art Modell (you're welcome, Cleveland fans), but it's entirely possible that each found the divine forgiveness that the rest of us could likely never bring ourselves to give. That's the thing about faith: it's not up to its practitioners to pass the final judgment. I know most viewers come to Star Wars just wanting a popcorn movie with Death Stars blowing up, but I honestly think there are some valid questions raised about larger issues that are worth discussing. The nature of redemption, especially within the context of spirituality, is the most significant of these. |

So what if you aren't getting the original without the extra stuff. You already have them on DVD and VHS and bottom line you will buy this anyways.

re: Star Wars
How many people here have read the original novels. If you had you would know those scenes were always meant to be there. And what about Lord of the Rings and Avatar. If the Peter Jackson and James Cameron decided to only release the extended version in the future would you gripe about that. Personally like the new "versions" although I do think there is room for the originals. At least it's better than colorizing old black and white movies.

Notice how no one is bitching about Avatar, Blade Runner, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, and the Alien series bluray releases, or ET, Lord Of The Rings, and Legend on DVD. That's just a few examples, there are many more. |

re: Star Wars
Lucas still might live long enough to put Star Wars on the next media format like holo-dvd or something. So I'm sure he still is holding back on some things.

Hopefully the droid control ship deleted scene makes it to the set in some capacity.

It's amazing they can make anything coherent out of all that. I think people dismiss this kind of filmmaking too easily.

re: Star Wars
They dismiss any kind of film-making too easily. I forgot who said it, but the fact that any film gets made is a miracle.
Of course just because something takes hard work doesn't make it good. I love all the Star Wars movies, though. |

Recieved a email from amazon a few hours ago, saying they have now announced a release date of Sept 27th 2011 for Star Wars.
And that they upgraded my order to ensure I recieve it on release day. |
re: Star Wars
My E-Mail gave a release date of Oct 3rd to 7th.
Right before my birthday too. That's gonna be nice. And showing up right around the first year anniversary of my dad passing away. Heh, he kept me home from school when I was 9 to go see ROTJ opening day. Nice timing. Very nice timing. |

no offense but...if they were deflecting the shots in that hall wouldn't there be a HUGE ASS chance that the placement of those Jedi would most likely kill the people in front of them. The idea is neat but....the execution of the placement of those Jedi is bad. If they had a a unified front moving along that hall that'd work.

No, don't have prime. So yeah that could have to do with it. No big deal. Like I said, I like the timing I got. It means more.

re: Star Wars
Given the recent revelation that Liam Neeson will be voicing Qui-Gon on The Clone Wars, many fans are speculating that he'll also be providing some new voice work for Revenge of the Sith. Particularly this scene:
