I still have my widescreen version of that VHS release. I use the fact that I paid for it to justify owning the despecialized versions.

The Jedi that "returns" is Anakin Skywalker. It really has nothing to do with Yoda - Luke's the one that brings him back.

I said it was a stretch but I think the title can refer to Vader but not necessarily solely to him. I think it can also refer to Luke since before he was trained there weren't any Jedi left (at least that were actively taking on the Dark Side). With that I still think my explanation sort of makes sense that Yoda is the one who trained Luke to bring about the return of the Jedi.

I prefer the Puggo Grande version.

Based on this press release, it sounds like it's 1 disc only. The only call out is the commentaries.

Well crap. I'm not sure if the steelbooks really outweigh the 3 bonus blu rays. I guess I'll keep waiting.

Pretty surprising that they couldn't even be bothered to include Digital HD copies with these releases.

Side note : I watched the Episode IV (aka Star Wars) Blu Ray this past weekend with my son for the first time. I know I'd seen these redone versions before but guess I'd forgotten how distracting and fake-looking the new entry into Mos Eisley is. How could Lucas watch that version, watch the original version and still decide this version is better? It's a travesty. And that Han Solo scene adds absolutely nothing story-wise, but makes Jabba look like he shrunk by half his size. It also makes Han Solo look like he's staring at Jabba's chin or something.

I think the digital releases, with the exception of Episode IV, are Disney releases. The physical releases are Fox releases. Disney probably isn't going to throw in digital codes that they get full profit from with a release that Fox makes the majority of the profit on.

I watched that scene recently too, and one of the lines of dialogue is repeated from another scene, making it obvious that it wasn't supposed to be included.

Wow, didn't know that. Well there goes any chance of ever getting them cheap.

Well, it could be worse, they could have just used the fat actor they originally had in that scene, then digitally imposed him in the other movies in place of Jabba.

They've already replaced the opening on everything except Episode IV. It just starts with a Lucasfilm logo, no Disney Logo.

That's only true of the digital distribution. The DVDs and Blu-rays are still distributed by Fox through 2020. From all indications, these Blu-rays will be 100% identical to the discs released previously, just put into new packaging.

Right, I'm aware of this, I may have misinterpreted Jeff's question, but I just meant to say that its probably an indication of what we'll see in front of future Star Wars releases (Ep VII going forward), meaning probably no Disney logos.

Jabba's scale really isn't that far off, at least not as far as his height. There are tons of pics of both characters next to C-3PO for scale. It's like I always say: there are too many valid flaws in the SW movies to debate non-existent ones.

Of course the scene does have weird cheats where the CGI character occupies the same physical space as Ford but that could be said about several original optical effects in the trilogy. The Death Star II battle in Jedi is full off distracting examples.

The Jabba in Return of the Jedi is lounging and half lying down, because he's too massive to move on his own. The CGI Jabba inserted into the first movie is standing upright and walks around. Not only are they different scales, the entire depiction of Jabba in the first movie misses the point of the character's conception in the third.

Obviously, that's a factor of Lucas needing to paste the character onto old footage shot when Jabba was played by a human actor who strutted around. But that's just one of several reasons why that scene should never have been added back to the movie.

Do the most recent version still have that bad effect of Han stepping on Jabba's tail?

I haven't watched these in a VERY long time and am still holding out for the original trilogy.

The first of the two videos posted above by VHS? in post #3765 shows all the versions of the scene including a reconstructed original take. It stats at the 9:00 mark.

Honestly, I think the scene is an intersting curiosity and I don't mind it in the supplemental features, but unlike ET taking a bath, this "new" footage just doesn't work and distracts from the rest of the film.

On top of that, it doesn't make a ton of sense logically : Han got his reward, if that was all it took to get on Jabba's good side, why not just wire him the money owed before the medal ceremony? Or do they not have wire transfers in this universe the way they don't have fetal ultrasounds?

People say all the changes are bad. But SOME of the changes are good, like cleaning up or correcting some effects. Or changing the Empire's writing in ROTJ from English to Imperial code (like in the first 2 movies).
