I sure hope I am wrong, but with LOA's 50th anniversary looming in 2012, I have a feeling the BD release will be held until then.

They can probably release it in Q4 of next year and still slap the "50th Anniversary" banner on the front. Most people aren't going to know or care about the anniversary part.

Much like the African Queen, I have zero need or interest for the gift set edition, but cannot wait to own the film on Blu-Ray.

At least they aren't making those (the sane) of us who don't want the silly trinkets wait an extra six months to a year for the film in a reasonable package. *

Here's an interesting article I just came across. They screened the restored version in El Paso, and the most interesting thing I found was this:
Today's screening may be the first time "River Kwai" will be shown in its original 2:55:1 aspect ratio, or the height-to-width ratio of the image, in which it was shot. It was filmed with Cinema Scope wide-screen lenses, but the ratio was "cropped and changed to 2:35:1 shortly after CinemaScope started," Crisp said. No prints have been found in the 2:55 ratio, he said.
"That's another kind of little joy I think in doing something like this. We get to see it the way they actually shot it," he said.

That ad makes it seem like it's only available as a gift-set, which isn't nearly as extravagant as the one for AQ, as this one seems to just have a digi-book and some lobby cards.

Pre-order is down to $20.99. Damn good price for a digibook of a classic title such as this.

This showed up in my gold box for $19.94, so I pre-ordered today. Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere) got his copy today and was raving about it.

I haven't seen this but am interested to. May have to put it on the Christmas list as a possibility.

Mine showed up today from Amazon. Just took a few pics of the packaging. The title has raised lettering and the sturdy outerbox is glossy. Very nice overall.

Looks gorgeous. My copy of this, Highlander, and Toy Story 3 all shipped today. Should have them tomorrow.

This article talks about the digital restoration and mentions that Taxi Driver is next on Sony's list.

It kills me to wait on this, but it's gonna be enough of a stretch to justify picking up Toy Story 3 tomorrow using the $8.00 coupon from Disney. Since that coupon expires on the 8th, it gets priority status.

I'm going to have to seriously consider chucking the outer slipbox for this, so I can store it with my other digibooks... although it's way fatter than any of them, so maybe it won't matter.

Tomorrow's a great day for lovers of classic films and digibooks!
