Excellent damn news. And yes, maybe we'll see a hint of Lawrence of Arabia seeing the light of day now. They've only had ads for it since 2007.

I've seen segments of the movie on HDNet Movies, it's only an amount of time before the official bluray is announced from Sony/Columbia.

It is a powerful movie but it is a war drama not an action picture. I always loved this as a kid but when the DVD was released I picked it up and found myself liking but not loving it. Have since disposed of the DVD. Will probably rent the BR upon release and give it another whirl.

I wish it wasn't a digibook, they are awful and prevent me from buying certain Blu-rays.

Sony, Digibook? Thought they dropped those about a year ago. Hope to see them return.

The special features posted above say "35 page book with stories and photos from the production." Granted it could be some kind of collectible packaging with a booklet included, but given a) Sony doesn't really do those and b) they have a history of releasing digibooks, I think it's a pretty safe assumption.

According to an industry insider who posts on the Criterion Forum, this will be a "major 4K restoration".

This was my experience also.

I only ask two things of this release: that the A/V quality be worthy of the film and the format, and that the bonus materials from the 2-disc DVD be retained, freeing me up to sell off that version. It's a little thing, but for some reason I feel better about upgrading when I can trade in the DVD version of a title. As for the film, I re-watched this during the Academy Awards Challenge and found I still love it.

Back in 2000, when Alec Guinness died, a local theater did a week-long screening of this and a friend of mine and I went. It was killer on the big screen, and a favorite movie-going memory of mine.

I had just the opposite experience. First time I saw it was as a young adult, and it's only gotten better for me over the years. And I was always a big fan of Bill Holden, so I tend to like this one more than Lawrence. Very happy to see this likely getting released sooner rather than later.

The PQ on the 2 disc set was quite poor. I sold it off years ago so I can't remember exactly how it looked, but my impression was that the film needed some major attention to get it to look up to snuff- if that was even possible. It looked like the film elements had deteriorated in some way. I'm very curious to see how they did, but based on how poor the original disc looked, I'm going to ratchet my expectations down real low for this- and hopefully, be pleasantly surprised.

Sony is the one major studio you can count on just about 100% of the time to do a title justice. I'm optimistic.

They've been working on that for awhile now, but it's been mentioned that River Kwai would debut before LOA. I don't expect LOA this year. When it comes to pre-1980 titles, Sony has been very selective on what they bring out. I think Kwai will be their major catalog release for Q4 and we'll see LOA next year.
