The Ghost Writer Blu-ray/DVD Combo -- August 3rd 2010 from Summit

http://www.theghostwriter-movie.com/

A ghostwriter stumbles onto a secret that places his life in danger as he takes down the life story of a former U.K. prime minister in this Roman Polanski-helmed adaptation of the Robert Harris novel. Convinced by his agent that he's been granted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, talented British screenwriter "The Ghost" (Ewan McGregor) agrees to aid British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) in completing his memoirs after the leader's former aid dies under mysterious circumstances. Almost immediately after The Ghost arrives at a remote mansion in the U.S. to begin working with the prime minister, Lang is accused of committing a war crime by a former British cabinet minister. Amidst a deluge of protestors and reporters, The Ghost delves into the unfinished manuscript and comes to the terrifying conclusion that his predecessor died because he discovered a link between Prime Minister Lang and the CIA. The more information The Ghost uncovers, the more convinced he becomes that his life could be in danger as well.

Doesn't leave much time to generate buzz if they stick to that August 3rd date, but I'm not complaining.

Artwork's up, and ... ... looks like the "combo" in the title actually means a dual-sided disc.

This totally kills whether or not I'll actually get it. Looks like this'll have to really go down in price for me to justify buying a flipper. Fucking christ. Sigh...

I definitely thought the first day & date combo title would have been from Universal, not Summit.

Imagine the riots by the Twi-hards if Summit does this to "Eclipse" this fall!

Unless they can the DVD version fans won't care. Walmart wouldn't allow Summit to do a BD Combo only release anyway.

HD DVD strikes back! Wonder how much money Toshiba gets from each sale? I can see other studios jumping in if this is a success. Cuts down on DVD copies being sold (from BD sets) and is a good way for retailers to stock more BD copies. Poor Blu-ray...can't beat DVD might as well join them.

If they'd have the balls to just release flippers with no separate dvd release, I could respect it. Really why wouldn't they? If nothing else, release a DVD case version.

Missed this in theaters, but plan on blind-purchasing the BD when it comes out.

Didn't have any definitive plans to buy until I saw that it was a flipper combo. Sold.

LOL it's one thing to not alter buying habits because of a combo, but to buy it now because it IS a combo? How much is Uni paying you again?

Just got an email from my webmaster, looks like I'll be reviewing this one. Probably get the discs by the middle of this week. I'm guessing based on the fact that reviews are already up, he'll probably want me to do this one first. I'll let you folks know how it is. Roman's work is usually pretty solid.

Interesting - just got this from Netflix and it's not a combo. It doesn't have any "rental only" markings either.

If I wind up liking it, I'll just go buy it and return the combo to Netflix.

I don't know what the big deal about the combo disc is. I got my copy last week of this and played just fine...

Oh, there's a lot of discussion about combo discs and their sordid history in one of the Universal threads (this one, actually). Glad to hear it's not faulty, though.

Oh yeah, I know about that and had experienced it with the HD DVD combos (Ocean's Thirteen specifically) but I have yet to have a problem (*knock on wood*).

Re: The Ghost Writer Blu-ray/DVD Combo -- August 3rd 2010 from Summit

Suffice it to say some folks see no need to insert a variable into a situation where a separate DVD serves the same purpose. With the proliferation of combo packs which have separate DVD's included, I don't see how a double-sided disc benefits anyone but the studio. It's not more convenient. If you want your DVD copy, you can have it, and you don't even have to take the Blu-ray with you. Why fix what isn't broken?

Yeah, personally I'm indifferent since I've never used the DVD copy (disc or combo) but it doesn't make much sense to do a combo from a consumer standpoint.

Canadian version is just a regular blu-ray disc - haven't watched this yet but am looking forward to it.

It's all about the studios. They are giving you a DVD copy, but not really. You can't sell that DVD, loan it out etc. Even though it may cost a bit more to make, it's still better than having several thousand sales lost because the DVD was sold/given away (it's what I do with every single one )

Oh I know and agree 100%. But this is why I don't understand anyone liking combos at this point.
