Re: Evil Dead - August 31, 2010

I do really like not having to change discs to watch extras, but I don't really care if the extras come on a DVD, as long as that was the way it was on the DVD. For instance, Escape From New York would be just fine in my book if instead of the DVD that's in there (a super-old flipper with no extras), Disc 2 from the 2-disc Special Edition was in there, and the commentary was on the movie disc. However, I don't like scenarios like Road House where I get a Deluxe Edition DVD and a totally barebones Blu. I want to feel like the BD and DVD were designed to go to together.

Here is one that fits your bill: Donnie Darko

BD has the commentary tracks (and both cuts of the film), and the second disc is the same DVD disc 2 from the DC release with the standard definition bonus features...

Another example of the same situation would be Patton....

Might just cancel and wait till this hits $10. Tired of rewarding studios with sales for a lazy job.

Anchor Bay had to create a specific DVD just for this release to comprise most of the Ultimate Edition's bonus material onto one disc. The actual set itself has all of the extras sprawled across the three discs.

Did they? This disc doesn't, as far as I know, contain all the Ultimate extras. My understanding was that it was Disc 3 of the 3 disc set.

Nope, they took extras from all three discs. One By One We Will Take You: The Untold Saga of The Evil Dead was from disc one, The Evil Dead: Treasures from the Cutting Room Floor was from disc two and the rest was from disc three, with some of the features from disc three not being brought over.

Well that sucks. They could have fit all those extras, plus all the extras not carried over from earlier releases, onto one BD.

How much did you pay? $17 seems a bit much. I predict it'll hit the $10-15 range in a few months.

Is anyone having problems playing this? I got it yesterday, and it starts up OK and plays all the trailers, but that's it. I had it sitting for an hour and it never got to the menu. I have not yet checked if there's a firmware upgrade, that will obviously be my next step, but this doesn't seem like the kind of movie that would need an upgrade. So, has anyone else had issues with it?

This is now 12.99 at Fry's but sold out online. I have mine waiting for pickup.

I might have to pick this up soon. Oddly enough I only own 1 version of Evil Dead :)

Listening to the new commentary now. Not impressed so far. Bruce is asking questions like he's an interviewer and it's mostly about pre-production and production. If you've read the books and listened to the old commentaries there's not much of new information (if any).
Haven't finished watching it yet, but so far I really like the more upbeat group commentaries from Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.

EDIT:
I'm impressed with video quality. To my surprise it looks like the contrast difference between the "post stamp" moon and the footage of the house has been cleaned up. I'm gonna miss it...

It's been tweaked a little more, too. Remember that jump cut near the end when Scotty realises he's not dead and jumps up? It's been smoothed over with some digital trickery.

It still looks odd, though.

I might add-- some of the melting effects seem to be tweaked too. Kinda blurred or, like, cross-faded with added flicker to cover the rough spots.

Funny the things you notice when you've seen a picture a gajillion times.

Picked this up at Fry's today for $12.99 ... they had a SURPRISING amount of copies (10+). Also finally picked Let The Right One In (w/ theatrical subs, thank god) for $15.49, which is the cheapest I've ever seen.

This is one damn fine looking Blu-ray release. I had a blast watching it again, it was like watching it for the first time.

I had forgotten that the Book of the Dead edition and the Japanese import DVD is in encoded in DTS-ES 6.1 (matrixed) sound, the bluray from what I can tell - isn't... right?

So no one else is having problems with this? I upgraded to the most recent firmware on my Pioneer BDP-120, I guess it's time to take the disc back, hopefully I just got a bad disc.

Let The Right One In has been cheaper from Amazon in the past. ;)

I picked up Evil Dead for $12.99 at Fry's too. I was originally going to hold off until reviews of the Sony UK BD came out and I could make a decision between the two, but based upon the PQ reviews and the low price, I made the decision to purchase now.
