What are the audio issues the DVD had?

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

There are many issues with distortions on voices and music, but two that are really noticeable are in Part II:

1) When Doc and Marty first show up in the future, Marty turns down the alley and gets his first glimpse of the future (this is before Doc asks him to change his clothes). The music flares up as Marty looks out the alley, and on the DVDs it sounds like it's underwater.

2) A similar occurence of the music problems occurs when we first see in the window of the nostalgia shop in the future where Marty gets the Sports Almanac. There's a music ad for Goldie Wilson's hover conversion (I think) playing over the scene, and again, the music sounds distorted and garbled.

Are these problems still there on the Blu-Rays?

The original trilogy release with the framing issues was released on December 17th, 2002. Then the set was announced to go on moratorium, but Universal decided to re-release the set in 2005 which was the same as the one from 2002, just without the booklet and the fixed framing issues on Parts II & III. The individual releases of all three films came out in February 2009 so essentially it took 6 years and some change to get all 3 films released by themselves.

I don't know about you guys but yes, the packaging sucks, but if you're fans of the films why not just store them in something else?

That's what I plan to do. I love the movies. Have no use for the digital copies. I've presold them for over half of what the box set cost me & will put the 3 remaining discs in a 3 disc blu ray case which I'll store right next to the abortion packaging. I'm hoping that Universal will issue replacement packaging though.

There were also some sound problems during the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. I will definitely post an update whenever I actually get around to watching Part II.

To be continued...

I checked both those moments, although I don't have the DVDs to compare them against. I didn't hear distortion on either, although the music in Goldie Wilson's ad sounds like it was deliberately made to sound lo-fi.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

Yeah, the packaging does, indeed, suck. I can take them out and put them back in fine, so I'm not concerned about ruining any discs but... I am concerned about the quality of the spring clips. Many have already reported them breaking upon 'normal' usage. I also dislike the cheap cardboard style packaging that houses all of the discs, and most of all, I really hate having to take my time to remove a disc and put it back in its place. I could take a disc out of a hub with no problems... I wouldn't have to put fingerprints on the disc or anything. Put it back in just as easily... but not in this piece of crap.

Now, that being said, I'd also like to say that I was one of the few in this thread that were laughing at the 'screenshot scientists', often siding with Josh in the fact that everyone should have waited before seeing the final product before tearing this transfer to shreds... well, not that I HAVE seen the final product for myself, I must say... I'm disappointed.

Back to the Future is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time, and the first film is one of the best films of all time. The transfers within this set are definitely miles above the DVD set, and I'm not sorry I purchased this either. However, I do feel that I've been consistently distracted by the EE... it's really atrocious. Do I think a 4k transfer would have looked better than a 2k one? Sure... but honestly? The resolution and everything is FINE... if it were not for the EE, this could have been one gorgeous set... but nope. Those halos aren't even TRYING to hide close to the objects they're shadowing... they're OUT there, man, and I just can't stand it.

I prefer these to the DVD set of course but, anyone who sticks up for how it looks as if it's the most gorgeous thing they've ever seen CLEARLY doesn't know what they're looking at.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

New member here, just registered after reading this entire thread. I'm wondering if the audio issues have been fixed for the 25th anniversary DVD (not Bluray) box set.

If that's the case, then maybe the 25th DVD set might actually be preferable to the Bluray, simply because of not having edge enhancement and digital filtering and whatnot.

I picked up the Bluray set at Costco yesterday and I love the digital enhancements for everything other than human flesh. All the street signs, storefronts, newspapers, etc. are extremely clear, and that to me is a plus. I also kind of like the tiny wrinkles and other flaws that are now visible in the actors' faces, but in general, I agree that the faces are too waxy and smooth looking.

Also, I'm wondering if the 2009 DVD extras disc (from Part I) is included in the 25th anniversary DVD set. Does anyone know if it's the exact same disc? Amazon says there are 7 discs in the set, but I'm assuming 3 of them are DC discs.

Is there anything in the 2009 releases not included in the 25th DVD/Bluray sets? Someone mentioned the only reason to buy the 2009 releases of Parts II and III are for the artwork, but I still have my original VHS tapes from almost 20 years ago for that. If there's nothing I need in that 2009 bonus disc, I have no reason to buy the 2009 edition of Part I either.

Oh, and also, in case anyone is wondering, Universal is STILL exchanging discs 2 and 3 from the 2002 box set with the framing issues. I knew about it but never bothered to exchange the discs, so I e-mailed them yesterday and they're sending me an envelope to send them the bad discs for exchange. I just hope the replacement discs have the correct artwork to match the first disc.

Sorry this is long, I don't usually write so much in a first post on a new forum.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

Thank you Suprmallet!

I'm pretty sure if the problem still existed, you would notice it even without the old DVDs to check against... it was not a subtle distortion.

I put my blu-rays into the old dvd case and tossed the retarded blu-ray case along with the useless digital copies.

I ordered the UK tin yesterday, it shipped today. I hope everything is playable on my US player, but that was one sweet looking set, so I had to chance it.

Are blu-ray and HDTV not restricted by NTSC and PAL, etc?

I got mine today too. Pretty amazing considering I live in Arizona. Oddly enough, the Alien set shipped the day before my BTTF set and it's not here yet. Really glad that I have hubs. With Winter's Bone and Moulin Rouge on the weekend docket, we're probably not going to be watching it until next week anyway.

Definitely renting this first as I only want the first one anyway, and the DVDBeaver screenshots look a little odd to me.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

I already bought and opened this set, so I'm stuck with it. But I would buy a 3-disc set (no DCs) in a heartbeat if it is issued. Maybe that was Universal's plan all along.

This set is just fucking retarded. I don't care if I can get the discs in and out. I'm simply ashamed to own something so badly designed.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

I just got my UK tin set and I have to agree that it is better designed than the US set. Hubs holding single discs, no springy tabs.

I'm kinda bummed the 1885 Doc & Marty picture is so low res, I would have killed to have a quality pic of that to frame. Oh well.

I'm glad I got the Blurays. But the packaging is so crappy (I cracked one of the tabs the very first time I took a disc out!). If they reissue this set without the DCs and with regular hubs, I will re-buy it and sell this set. It still boggles my mind that someone would even design this contraption.

If they want to be cheap, just send me the 3 discs in paper sleeves and let me download the artworks. I'll do the rest!

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

I'm used to the packaging now. Of course, I hope we don't get more sets in this form. But it's fairly easy now to remove the discs and put them back. I also got lucky because my slipcase actually fits snug. It seems most of the slips won't stay on for many people.

The HD Room has a story about the packaging and Universal responded by providing a pdf of instructions for removing the discs.

Out of 2000+ DVDs and Blu-rays this UK package is by far the coolest set I have ever seen. It is beautiful I wish I had more words. As a huge Back to the Future fan -- this is a dream set.

One thing I never noticed before.... in BTTF 2 when you see the Jaws 19 stuff... you can see "directed by Max Spielberg" on the side of the marquee. Only until I saw this on Blu did I catch that. Max is Steven's son and was born in 1985.

Re: "Back To The Future" on Blu! (10-26-2010)

I just got my tin in the mail today. Its really basic just like a fucking case should be, and I like all the extra stuff it came with. I guess the only complaint I have about it is the tin itself is a little large but I can live with it. If anything I may just keep the case outside of the tin and display the tin somewhere else.

How sturdy is the tin? I've read someone say it dents easily.

Seems alright to me. I wouldn't think it should be a problem as long as you don't plan on being rough with it.

Both of these issues you cited are fine on the Part II Blu-ray.

Unfortunately, one problem from the Part II DVD was carried over to the Blu-ray:

I mentioned a problem in my previous post about the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scene. It occurs when Marty follows Biff up the stairs into the gym while the band is playing "Night Train". A blip sound occurs at 1:15:12 when playing the English DTS-HD 5.1 track and the saxophone music gets garbled for a few seconds afterwards. The problem does not occur on the Spanish or French tracks.
