I would think the huge, name casts of these films esp. Justice League would stretch the budgets unless they're working cheap.

Meh. I can see that I guess, but even so it just seems like this line could be so much better than it is if it followed the already established franchises. I mean you don't get much better than the DC Animated universe. Batman: The Animated Series in my (and many others) opinion is one of the greatest super hero adaptations ever. Why they would feel the need to branch off into something different just seems weird to me. Especially given the fact that I think some of the people involved in that series have done some of these movies.
That doesn't seem to be working though, according to the WB numbers. Also, those stories are usually 2-12 issues long. For some reason, WB seems intent in putting a time constraint of 90 minutes to all their animated films. Again, by the numbers reflecting their sales, it seems that not to many are pleased with their efforts.
I'd say there's probably some misguided sales expectations since Wonder Woman and Green Lantern came out stand alone without much tie in to anything else, where as stuff like other Batman or Superman movies had their live action theatrical pictures recently giving them more attention.

I don't like the new Batman voices and that preview for Red Mask did nothing for me. I'll probably give it a rent, but my days of buying these DC movies is long over. The quality of them is just terrible. They are pretty much as bad as the Marvel direct to DVD animation now.

I've loved every single one of these DC animated movies so this is a definite buy for me. It would be nice if I could just subscribe to these like comics so I'd automatically arrive in my mailbox when they're released.

Honestly they have all been miss for me. Crisis on Two Earths was just dreadful. The Spectre cartoon was the only saving grace of that disc.

The only thing I can imagine is the exclusives having the same UPC as the regular BD.

Damn, I was going to say no Conroy no sale, but I'm a fan of Greenwood, so I feel obligated to check it out.

Re: Batman: Under the Red Hood ---> Summer 2010
I was able to watch this movie a few weeks early, so I figured I'd pen out my thoughts on the film. Before I get to it, it's worth mentioning that my favorite adaptations of the Batman characters are Nolan's films (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight ) and the '92-'95 cartoon Batman starring Kevin Conroy. That being said, if you don't like one of more of those adaptations you may not agree with my review. I will also add that I am by no means a "Batman buff", so this is not from a huge fans point of view.
The movie opens with an aged Joker beating the living shit out of Robin in an abandoned warehouse. Apparently he's trying to get answers from him, but we never know find out what the questions are. Batman is on his way with his batpod, but of course he arrives to late. The Joker has nearly beat Robin unconscious and sets the timer of a bomb off before leaving the warehouse. Batman arrives and the building explodes, the Joker is no where to be seen. Batman finds Robins body and carries it out the rubble. How is the entire building gone but Robin doesn't have a scratch? Beats me.
Opening credits and now its five years later. We learn that the Robin that was killed was actually the second Robin, not Dick Grayson, who is now Nightwing voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. The Joker ends up in Arkym, we never find out how. Now a new villain named Red Hood is on the streets, quickly "buying out" nearly every drug operation in Gothem and killing anyone who gets in his way. But he's doing it to clean up the streets so it's ok. Oh, and he happens to have all the mad martial art/tricking skills of Batman. You find out later why, that's as much I can say with out spoilers.
The film is not boring. No, it' an hour and fifteen minutes of solid entertainment. The story is interesting, but the cheap twist really makes it lose points. The excuse for how the twist was possible was even an bigger pile of shit, you'll understand once you see it. Under the Red Hood borrowed themes and character actions heavily from The Dark Knight, which isn't a bad thing. But the medium of hand drawn animation really can't be taken as seriously as Nolan's films, it just doesn't work. The character of Ra's Al Gul was completely wasted in this film, he doesn't need to be in it, it feels forced. Red Hood's original motivation for doing what he was doing was legitimate and reasonable, but at the end you find out that his reasoning is nothing more then him being an ignored child. Sort of. You'll understand later.
Overall it's nice addition to the Batman cartoon films, despite it's flaws. It's enjoyable and worth a watch if your a Batman fan, but I wouldn't buy it. Considering it's short run time and lack of replay value it's not worth a purchase, but a rent will suffice.

I got the blu-ray too, and I just thought it was decent, certainly nowhere as good as Wonder Woman or Green Lantern. Sure it was entertaining, but it's generally forgettable.
I'm not a fan of Robin in general, but this Red Hood movie made me a fan of the second Robin.

I enjoyed it, especially the fight between Red Hood and Batman at the end. More brutal then I thought it would be, which was a pleasant surprise.

This might be the best of the DC made for home video films so far.
It adapted the original story pretty closely with a few move along the plot things missing.
I'd say 4 out of 5 stars.
One thing that really irked me was the use of Bruce Greenwood as Batman, he was clearly doing a Kevin Conroy impersonation, so what was the point, Greenwood isn't any major star,

Re: Batman: Under the Red Hood ---> Summer 2010
I really enjoyed it for the most part, but really thought it was rushed. And that's been a general over all complaint of mine about ALL the direct to DVD animated movies from both Marvel and DC. The pacing seems rushed at times in this and I guess I can't understand why we can't just get a 90-120 actual movie instead. It seemed that it would have been better if it was paced just a bit slower. I really felt like the ending was rushed.
That said, I do agree this is the best direct to DVD DC film so far, but that's not saying much compared to what has come before. It is NOT as good as Mask of the Phantasm (which, by the way, was about the same length of Red Hood, but it didn't feel rushed) but I would say this movie looks INCREDIBLE on Blu-Ray.
