I actually only wanted the hypnotic first film, but the Blu-ray of that is more expensive than the trilogy.

I have no doubt you've already seen it, but Powaqqatsi really grew on me. I initially saw it at the theatre, when I was a university student. We went with some local girls from the neighbourhood where we were renting a house. It was pretty funny to see the WTF??? look on their faces when we were leaving the theatre. They weren't familiar with Koyaanisqatsi, and just thought we were going to see some movie with a weird name.

I was initially slightly disappointed with it, as I expected something more similar to Koyaanisqatsi, but I've ended up watching it, and listening to the soundtrack, more often than Koy. We also saw Powaqqatsi Live! which was the film, along with a live score performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble.

As for Naqoyqatsi, I still haven't watched the whole thing. It's one of those things that I have to be in the mood for. One of these days...

Many, many years ago, I started watching Powaqqatsi, and it was nothing like the first film, so I ended up not finishing it. Koyaanisqatsi is just such a uniquely mesmerizing sensory experience, as well as being a puissant commentary on the alienation and automation of modern city life. I will of course give Powaqqatsi a full viewing, and watch Nagoyqatsi, which I haven't seen at all. I take it you weren't enthralled by it. I would rather have bought the first film alone.

Yes, we (another friend and Koyaanisqatsi fan) were initially feeling that way about Powaqqatsi. There was one part where it very briefly transitioned to the more frenetic nature of Koy, and we sort of looked at each other like 'ah, at last,' but it was short lived. The fact that we saw it in the theatre, meant we were definitely watching it for the duration. If it had been on TV, there is the possibility that we would've skipped it. I'm glad that didn't happen!

I guess that's sort of why I haven't finished Naqoyqatsi. Having it home, I have the option to watch it 'sometime,' whereas Powaqqatsi was a 'paid for' viewing. In contrast, I was instantly hooked when I happened across Koyaanisqatsi on PBS, way back when.

Interestingly, the IMDB ratings for the trilogy are 8.2, 7.2, and 6.4, for K, P, and N, respectively.

My 88 Films box set of the Species films shipped via Australia Post, now I just need to purchase the region free blu ray player that a kind DVD-Talker linked to in I believe the thread dedicated to 88 Films releases.

Re: The last Blu-ray you bought (Round 3)

My 88 Films Species Collection Deluxe Collectors edition blu ray arrived, no damage and it was waiting for me in my apt mailbox. It arrived fast considering it shipped from Australia Post and was ordered on Amazon's UK site. Since it could still run you up to $160.00+ to purchase the OOP Region 1 releases, I am super happy with this purchase.
