Off beat though? He’s got a very real mental disorder. This movie is about living with and trying to be happy and not overcoming, bc I think always there, but living and dealing with and having some semblance of a life. I always saw this as a mental health awareness movie more than anything else. A great one at that.
Rom-com? I dunno with this one. Certainly love comes into play, but if any humor, it’s dark and subtle. This was more and incredible study in human mental health by Anderson. That shouldn’t go unnoticed. But, this was a brilliant piece by Anderson. And, I think Sandler’s best work with this and Uncut Gems. I think his most underrated, not including earliest stuff, like Hard Eight. Which though it’s a gem, probably least seen. He didn’t really explode till Boogie Nights a year later. Now 1 film every 5-8 or so years. Whoopee.
But, PDL top 5 with Magnolia #1. I really need to see both those again, real soon. Hell, I could see his whole catalog again, it’s been so long. Probably The Master was last I saw, but got to revisit older, There Will Be Blood, all, what 8 or so directed He’s like QT in his production. But, whatever, they all so great. Too bad Criterion couldn’t get a hold of his catalog. I bet those would be some nice 4K and Blus. Though some are still nice. Boogie Nights has good a/v, but supplements are lacking on many. He deserves better imo.
