Europe isn't Region A though, right?
It's up on Amazon now too.
I'm torn about this. Obviously I want the movies, but MGM did a pretty lousy job with TGTB&TU. I'm sure they're just going to repackage their lousy presentation rather than the significantly better one released overseas The European BD of A Fistful of Dollars looks gorgeous by all accounts, and after TGTB&TU, I'm not expecting MGM's BD to be in that same league either.
I'd rather pay extra and import higher quality discs from overseas. Of course, the best looking TGTB&TU release doesn't have English audio or subs.

No, but plenty of European releases aren't region-coded. I have a player that can change regions, though, so that doesn't get in my way. Price and language options are the only hiccups that do, and that's unfortunately the case here.

They still screwed up TGTB&TU? And one release of FOD is zoomed in while the other looks to red? Pass.

And TGTB&TU is still that reconstruction with the cave scene that the director didnt like (and rightly so, its badly acted) and many of the sound effects out of time with the edits.

The problem with A Fistful of Dollars is particularly annoying. I think I'd be fine with the way it looks, but that weird zoom is awful.
It figures that the one I liked the least out of the three looks pretty great.

Yeah, glad I didn't sell off my DVD set, I almost did. This doesn't really seem worth an immediate upgrade. A shame.

What's the problem with TGTB&TU's picture quality? The reviews I read (including DVD Savant's on here) have all been favorable toward it.

There's an inhuman amount of digital noise reduction on TGTB&TU that saps away pretty much all of the fine detail and leaves everything looking artificial and waxy. Look at this comparison between MGM's BD and the Italian release from Mondo:

The difference is enormous.

I wouldn't say that video/audio assessments are DVD Savant's greatest strengths. I don't think he'd argue otherwise either.

Maybe its just me, but I've read a lot of Savant's reviews where he has given PQ extremely "favorable" marks & IMO they were actually average to border line dreadful transfers. The man has great movie taste & immense knowledge but I have no clue what he is watching some of these films on.

Well, crap... I already sold off my DVD set in anticipation of this. I guess I'll be holding out for a good sale price.

I just read on another forum that people have seen this set in stores, but most stores seem to have only ordered ONE COPY! The same shit happened with the DVD set. I guess I'll have to order this one online too and get a mangled set once again.

Is the Italian BD of TGTBATU & FAFDM from Mondo or who ever Region-free too?
Stores here had plenty of copies.
Watched mine over the weekend. As far as PQ goes I'd rank them like this. In 1st place is FAFDM, it looks absolutely FANTASTIC!! In 2nd place is AFOD, looks good but I could see room for improvement. In 3rd place is TGTBATU, looks no better than the DVD. Just my two cents.

A Fistful of Dollars is region-free. The Italian BD of The Good... doesn't have an English soundtrack or English subs...not sure about the region coding, but the lack of English audio is probably a deal-killer for you. Because it's a different cut of the movie, you can't even use the English soundtrack off the U.S. BD without modifying it.
