Amazon now says that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is "In Stock". Price remains $17.49.

The Amazon listing only has Spanish indicated under the subtitles information... please don't tell me that the only English available is from dubbing!

Looks like they went back and redid the title...at least added a few things to it. Maybe if we're lucky they switched back to theatrical subtitles.

Amazon has Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon back again, with a release date of July 27. But they have raised the price to $22.49 so it's cheaper to import it from the UK. Go figure.
I'll be interested to learn if this release differs in any way from the one included in the box set, as Artman mentions above.

It came from the link in Artman's post below:
FWIW, the UK BD has TrueHD 5.1 Mandarin and English tracks. It defaults to English so one has to select the Mandarin track and English subtitles from the menu.

[TDB, 5/19/10]Also today, Sony has announced a new Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Blu-ray for release on 7/27 (SRP $24.95). This new edition will feature all the extras of the original Blu-ray release (including audio commentary with Ang Lee and James Schamus, the Unleashing the Dragon: The Making of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and A Conversation with Michele Yeoh featurettes and the photo montage) along with an all-new commentary by cinematographer Peter Pau. The disc will also include new Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio mixes in Chinese (Mandarin), English and French. The previous Blu-ray had uncompressed PCM 5.1 and standard Dolby Digital 5.1 only. Let the grumbling begin.

The UK and US discs are the same. Both have TrueHD audio. The packaging on the US release incorrectly states PCM, says that the language is Cantonese (it's Mandarin), lists wrong subtitle options, and claims that the disc is locked to Region A (it's not).

^I thought that was the case but I've never seen the US disc and the DVD Talk review says the track is PCM, so I didn't want to assume that the UK and US discs were the same.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon pre-order is down to $16.99 at Amazon. Not a bargain yet but that's the lowest it's been.

^And it's better than what I paid to import it from the UK in January. But a catalog release can usually be found for $10 or so with patience.
Now that this title has finally been released individually in the USA, I am curious to know it compares to the previous release. Same subtitles? Better subtitles? Is the PQ/AQ the same? Better?

I have the UK steelbook at home and have this disc on the way. I'm not expecting any differences on subtitles but I am curious to look. If there's a specific scene I should check post it here.

^Josh Z gives an example of a difference between the theatrical subtitles on the Superbit DVD (which I no longer have to refer to) and the UK BD in post 21 above. That would probably give a pretty good indication of which subtitles are being used on this new USA BD release: the original theatrical ones by screenwriter James Schamus or a new translation from the Mandarin dialog used on the previous BDs.

Well, technically, the cover art has also been updated with the correct specs this time.

oh goddamn it, so now I have to buy the US version for the new commentary track - for the completist in me, I had to go out and buy the UK steelbook edition.

I'll trade you. I don't need the commentary that badly, but would kind of like the Steelbook. I'll throw in the cardboard box from the Crouching Tiger/House of Flying Daggers/Curse of the Golden Flower box set.

Oh, a couple more insigificant differences: The new disc is BD-Live enabled (just the standard link to Sony's generic portal), and does not have the annoying Sony promo before the main menu. The selection of previews has also been updated, but still no trailer for Crouching Tiger itself.
