Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Just watched Avatar for the 1st time on BR.
Loaded up a little longer than a normal movie, but not un-bearable. The PQ was perfect, when I zoomed in, no of the quality disappeared. The only other time I saw that was on Toy Story 1 & 2. The PQ of the Non-CGI people/things was the best I have ever watched. The movie is all I watch over and over again, so I will happy with until I buy a 3-D HDTV. Well Jim C and thanks for taking the time to care out the PQ of your movie, how many other movies have been put out on BR but do not look as good as they could have? |

I'm curious to know how it looks on DVD. Is it also a good looking DVD (by DVD standards)?
Anyway, after we watched the Blu, I put the DVD in to do a quick comparison. Watched five or six scenes, and I'd say it's a solid 480 SD transfer; as expected, there's quite a bit less fine detail than the Blu and the colors are duller. As for a DVD transfer, I'd probably rate it at an A-. |

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Best Buy has two TVs running the movie side-by-side, one is the DVD the other is the Blu-Ray.
Shamelessly, they have all the settings on the DVD TV set horribly and the image looks like a hazy, dark mess. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Best Buy being deceitful? Next you'll tell me they're offering to update your BD player's firmware for a $30 fee.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Yeah, you make a fair point. For once I agree with you.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Why should I buy Avatar on BD now and not wait for the S.E. to come in "the fourth quarter"?
|
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
That's a question only you can answer.
I would because I like the movie and want to watch it whenever I feel like it. |

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Picked this movie up, saw it for the first time last night. Not a bad flick by any means, it might not be the first time the general story has been told, but it was very interesting and quite a gorgeous film.

Why do those that like it, like it so much? |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
For those of us with the Sammy UP5000, someone on the AVS Forum is citing an April 30th FU for the player. So, if this proves true, we should be well and properly immersed in Avatar by the start of next week.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I hadn't planned on getting this until the special edition, but I just won a copy from a joblo contest. I haven't followed this thread at all, but it sounds like there may be some issues. Is anyone having problems playing it on their PS3?
edit: Sounds good, Thanks RocShemp. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
No problems on my PS3. And I played it before the latest firmware update.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Went to Wallmart the other day to make an appointment to get my front tires replaced.
The waiting room for the tire department had an HDTV in it that was playing Avatar. The PQ seemed to be "Merky", the details/colors were noticable off. So, I look to to see if they were using a HDMI cable, yes they were. Also examined the player to see if it was a Blu-Ray player, yes it was. Then I ask one of the Wallmart tire guys, is that playing the DVD or Blu-Ray. He said it was Blu-ray, but I clearified my question and asked if the disk was DVD or Blu-Ray. He went over and opened up the disk tray and out popped the DVD of the movie. All I can say it the DVD quality of the movie was TERRIBLE!!!!!! Blu-ray has brought the movie watching experience to such a high level, it is really hard to watch DVDs at all now. DVDs make me feel like I need some better glasses. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
You're judging the quality of a DVD based on what you see on display in a store?
No offense but that's coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. You should never judge the quality of a DVD, Blu-ray or television set by in-store displays! |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
^ Also, their HDTV probably had its setup all screwed up, making the DVD picture more terrible. I looked at some of the comparison pics between the DVD and the Blu-ray, and I have to say that the DVD looks better than I thought it would (probably due in part to the image resizing, but still).

If you'd like a full comparison of dvd vs bd, check here: www.tirerotationandblurayexpertise.com
I always use them before making a blu-ray purchase. |
