Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
PS3 and Sony BDP-S360 played with no issues.
I have a 42" 720p/1080i plasma, and I decided to sit directly in front of it (taking Jim Cameron's own advice about ditching the coffee table in the middle of the living room and moving closer). Wow, amazing, jaw-dropping....they just aren't good enough to describe this disc. |

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I saw the Blu-ray version on my Sony KDL-40EX500 40" LCD panel and Sony BDP-S370 player.
WOW is the image amazingly sharp. http://www.en.kolobok.us/smiles/arti...C_doubleup.gif The sharpness reminds me a lot of the Disney/Pixar Blu-ray releases in level of clarity, especially the scenes on Pandora. Of course, I expected that since the "live" action was filmed with digital cameras and the entire movie was processed and edited digitally, too. I have got to see this on a really big HDTV monitor like a 55" or larger flat panel or a 65" or larger Mitsubishi DLP RPTV. :) |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
FYI - Avatar has already sold 1.5 million BD copies.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Plays fine on my Panasonic BD-30 and I've never updated the firmware on it, but it does load pretty slow as others have indicated.
Got the regular case from Target, too. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
It takes awhile to load, but it plays fine on my Sony BDP S300, which has never had a firmware update.
Wow. This is probably one of the most beautiful Blu Rays I have ever seen. The whole film is eye candy. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
The Digital Bits just posted their review as well.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I was at work today, as I work in retail but I noticed all The Avatar dvds and blu-rays today. At the end of the day all the blu-rays where still there but the DVDs where all sold out. What gives. I picked uo the blu-ray as it said blu-ray + dvd. So even if they didn't have a blu-ray player they could of still bought the movie in both versions.
They had the Avatar movie on the screen displays at my work but I think it was the DVD not the blu-ray that they where showcasing. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Black levels are neigh-perfect, but shadows ranges from deep black to grayish. Neither of those things are defects - they're artistic choices. |

So I guess this finally makes it officially mainstream, no?
the 1.5 million number is from NikkinFinke, the same person who claimed all those Transformer HD DVD sales. |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Pretty stunning stuff, though the CG doesn't hold up as well overall as it did in the 3D-theater, but mostly just on wider shots with lots of blue characters or quick movements; closeups of Navii look very real. Still a lot of "wow" moments for my friend and I though, and I can't find much to fault (except that it isn't film ;) ). The sound is wonderful, never even touched the receiver remote once. Viewed on a 51", btw.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I never saw it in 3D, but the environments look fantastic for the scenes I sampled. Very 3D-ish.

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Definitely got some of that last night. 90% of it looks jaw-dropping, the other 10% of the time I really noticed I was watching an animated movie, but like I said it was consistently when there multiple Naavii on screen. Without the 3D forcing your focus like in the theatrical experience, those types of effects were more noticable at home.
Still one hell of an impressive disc and movie. It's actually nice to see the "entire frame" in 2D without the forced perspective of the 3D, very different viewing experience. Cameron's tech design is the shit and it drips all over this movie. Geek out! |
Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
I don't get why they didn't just have the BD/DVD combo pack be the only release, that way it guarantees that people have a Blu-ray disc in their homes and thus are more likely to invest in a player at some point.
I popped this in last night just to sample a few scenes... it looked incredibly good. Right up there with King Kong. I don't think my eyes like 3D too much, so even though I thought this looked great in theaters, the level of detail on a 52" screen with the 1.78:1 image was goddamn impressive. I'll prob sit down to watch it all the way through on Sun. |

For the biggest movie of the decade? It would confuse the heck out of consumers. They could have gone the Disney route (DVD+BD in DVD packaging).

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10
Toy Story 1 and 2 are the BR have been using over the past month to show off BR/HDTV PQ.
Being that I am on the road for work and have not seen the PQ of Avatar yet, which one would you guys say is the best PQ to show off your HDTV setup? |

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who bought a few DVDs before getting the player, and then did it again with BD and/or HD DVD. |
