Well, it's neither the OAR nor the director's preferred aspect ratio. I'm not sure what you mean by "a movie like this." A movie shot and composed in 16x9? A movie seen on a majority of theatrical screens in 1.85:1?

In fact, I'm not sure there's ever been "a movie like this" before. :D

Cool news on the forthcoming SE:

Special Edition

The November release will feature three cuts of the movie: the "basic movie", as theatrically released; an extended cut with 6 minutes of fully finished footage seamlessly added back in; and an earlier cut of the film that has 30 or 35 minutes of additional footage, some of which will be in unfinished form. Cameron explained: "it will be a little bit more like some of the Disney stuff that they do where they leave pencil tests in for scenes that were never done. That's really more of a fan's exploration of what the movie might have been, or a lot of the ideas that fed into it."

Additionally, the disc will offer a picture-in-picture with "just the reference cameras of the capture." This will be a parallel cut, matching the finished movie shot by shot. "It doesn't look like the movie, but the essence of it and the moment is exactly what you see in the final film. It's just people in black leotards. It's pretty wild. It's pretty amazing."

I'm kind of disappointed that the version with 35 minutes of additional footage will be in unfinished form. But at least the theatrical version will be on there, so I'll pass on this barebones release in April.

^ Sounds good to me. Nice to have multiple versions in one release. I wasn't expecting a workprint version. The PIP feature sounds just like the all green screen version of Sin City.

That seems like a lot of extra video. It will be interesting to see if there's a noticeable visual difference between the initial "reference quality" release and the SE.

I too was hoping that the extra 30+ minutes would have been fully rendered. Oh well. I really dug the TC and that's all that matters. I'll wait for the SE release. :up:

They should keep working on those extra 30 minutes up until that point, and include them in the extended theatrical release.

Well Cameron has just said that he is currently getting Weta to finish rendering a number of scenes.

I don't think we will know for sure just how much fully rendered new scenes we will have until the SE is finalized and solicited.

If you want to get technical, you could say that Shutter Island, X Men, Iron Man, Gangs of New York, etc.... is not presented in its OAR in theaters or on DVD/Blu Ray. Any movie shot on Super 35 is cropped to 2.40:1, and the majority of movies coming out today are shot on Super 35. A lot are shot anamorphic also, which has a native ratio of 2.40:1, but not as many as Super 35.

a) Avatar was not shot on film.

b) If a movie is protected by the director for multiple aspect ratios, and then cropped one way for theatrical presentation and a different way for home video, then it's necessary to talk about "theatrical ratio," "intended ratio," "director's preferred ratio," etc. The simple term "OAR" doesnt cover it.

c) In the case of Avatar, it should now be completely obvious that 16:9 (HD video aspect) is all of the above. The only theaters where the matted/re-framed 'scope version was shown were those CIH rooms where the preference for "bigger" trumped the preference for showing the full frame.

It's hard to tell from screen shots selected by someone else to make a point. But the ones I've seen strongly suggest that Cameron didn't really even "protect" for 'scope, as much as he just made sure that no critical information would be lost. The film was clearly framed and composed for 16x9.

Of course AVATAR was not shot on film, my point is that the term OAR is misused, and that cropping is a regular thing in movies.
