Re: Just watched my first blu-ray movie-not impressed
I can kind of understand where he's coming from. My rule of thumb is that most movies before say... 1995, really don't look as good as movies after 1995 do. I watched Blade Runner last night and was SORELY disappointed in the transfer as say compared to... Wall-E. I have found that most 20 year old movies are grainy (better than DVD, but grainy) such as Superman, Star Trek 2, Blade Runner... However, I watched the Killers BR the other night and it blew my socks off with its crystal clear picture.

I think Blade Runner is one of the best Blu-rays, easily. Yes better than Wall-E. North by Northwest also looks incredible. Hell Repulsion impressed the hell out of me and that's a black and white grainy film.
I guess when I see some old film look better than I've ever seen it, is great. I expect Wall-E to look good.

Now people are comparing Blade Runner to WALL-E? Damn Pixar stuff should look perfect given its construction elements. If you've incrementally seen Blade Runner back to it's original release to t.v.broadcasts-VHS-LD-DVD-remastered DVD-Blu-ray/HD DVD then you'd be blown away. And get off my lawn!

To see if your rule of thumb works, go watch Gladiator and tell me that it looks better than Blade Runner.
I'll wait.

From the FAQ section:
I upgraded to Blu-ray but don't notice much of a difference? You will find several threads on this topic in HD Talk. If you aren't noticing much of a difference between your standard DVD's and the Blu-ray discs, first make sure you are using a Blu-ray player hooked up to a TV capable of 720p or 1080p via HDMI. Make sure the output of the player is set to 1080p (or 720p) and the TV is calibrated for optimum picture www.tweaktv.com. Quite frankly there are a few Blu-ray discs that are not much of an improvement over standard DVD (Total Recall) and there are some standard DVD's that look stunning when upconverted (Titanic SE). Sometimes the size of the TV will limit the ability to notice an improvement. With the right equipment, settings and disc 80 - 90% of hi-definition media will kick standard DVD's ass.
After 1 viewing on a 32" TV do you really think you can judge the entire format?

Re: Just watched my first blu-ray movie-not impressed
I believe that two points that have been made multiple times are very likely in this case:
1. With a 32" HDTV you will not see a huge difference sitting 10' away. There should be a difference, but it will not be nearly the 'wow factor' of a larger TV, or sitting much closer to the same TV. And that's not meant as a 'mine is better than yours' type statement (if it comes across that way) - its reality.
2. If you had only watched a single Blu as of the starting of this thread, then it is obviously a relatively new system (the Blu player if nothing else). There is a distinct possibility that something is not set up right. Cables, Blu settings, etc. How are you running the video from the blu player to the TV? What is the output set to on the blu player?
DISCLAIMER - I have not seen The Thing blu-ray to be able to comment on the quality (or lack there of) of that particular movie. It's also possible that it's just not a high quality blu...

First of all-I have a 32 in. Sanyo HD tv. Watched The Thing last night. Pretty familiar with movie since I own it on laserdisc and dvd. Is it better than the laserdisc--yes. How about dvd? Slightly better. There isn't alot of grain in the movie to begin with so trying to find differences might be difficult. The dts soundtrack sounded like a louder version of the dvd dolby digital . Next movie will be Goldfinger. I'm glad I didn't go bonkers and buy every blu-ray in sight since the first movie was disappointing. Hopefully the next movie(s) will be a big improvement. Bottom line. If a movie has alittle grain in it and the blu-ray doesn't-is it worth the upgrade---no. Plus with The Thing-you couldn't watch the documentary unless you watched it as you watched the movie. No -theatrical trailer. Even the laserdisc had one.

It certainly seems a minority opinion here, but I think that better demo material would be something older that looks really great on BD, such as The Searchers or The Prisoner TV show. I've been watching the The Prisoner on BD lately and it sure never looked like that back when I watched it on TV! But some people see a bit of film grain and think that the BD is defective or some such thing.
We need a thread that recommends BDs that are the best upgrade over the upscaled DVD. I think I'll start one.

Well, if it's any consolation, when I watched my first Blu-Ray on my old-school 30" 1080i Samsung with component input I wasn't that impressed either. Now I have a 42" 1080p 120hz Samsung, and I'm like
No going back now.

Re: Just watched my first blu-ray movie-not impressed
I have a 32" 720p Samsung and the difference from DVD to Blu-ray for most titles on that is astounding. I can only imagine how good things are going to look when I eventually get a larger television. And older movies, while incredibly clear-looking in HD, don't always look as good as a more recent film. Like some others said, check out WALL-E, check out Transformers 2, etc. The format definitely improves older films, but you will be blown away by most newer films.
I have a 32" LCD that displays 720p (accepts 1080i) and I've noticed a big difference between my Blu-Ray's and DVD's since Day 1. Granted the first two Blu-Ray's I bought when I first got my player was Pirates Of The Caribbean 1 & 2

Also I thought The Thing had a great transfer when I watched it in October (HD-DVD copy). Definitely a step up from the two previous DVD versions I owned.

Just watched my second ever blu-ray(War Greatest Hits-Live)-impressed. It didn't have the greatest production values and there was a glitch between songs 1-2 but besides that the picture looked great and the sound was average at best.

I understand others points about the 'grainy' comment I made. I guess sometimes you watch one BR disc and it is absolute crystal clear and then one may imagine they will all look that way and discount the obvious improvements that have been made. I apologize for this...

Yeah, no thanks. No need to upgrade to something I don't need and waste money I don't have much of on something that isn't worth it. Now, if they make something that actually transports you into the Phoebe Cates/Fast Times/Pool Scene, then maybe an upgrade will be necessary.
In the pool scene, what if you're transported into Judge Reinhold's bathroom by mistake??
