I agree. That cover (in the adsheet) is very cool!

I can't believe the stinker we got stuck with in the US for the DVD release.

The R2 DVD cover was so much better.

Looks like I'm gonna be getting my Jaws 19 3D fix after all!

Punked!

What began as a joke is now becoming reality. As if this was a Twilight Zone episode, news from USA confirms the Blu-ray launch of Back to the Future on Blu-ray, based on our phony leaflet.

First things first:

The joke was built on some basis of reality, because as many will know, Back to the Future has been rumored to be coming up to Blu-ray for a while. That's why we elaborately made a fake trade ad that was believable. We made up the number of discs, the cover picture, etc., and as an ultimate joke, we added a preposterous short film with the lovable Jaws 19 (which was Zemeckis' joke for Spielberg in BTTF II), but in 3-D, in keeping with the current fad.

Obviously, many of you realized that this was a joke the minute you saw that short film mentioned, even though others totally fell for it (which was the whole point).

It now happens that, through none other than The Digital Bits' Bill Hunt, there is confirmation [Rumor Mill, January 5] that the Back to the Future Trilogy will indeed come out on Blu-ray in 2010. Sources from Universal in the USA have assured him that it will finally come out this year.

What's really surprising for us is that he's also got confirmation from Universal that the trade ad is genuine – which is completely impossible, as it had been completely made up by our editorial team. Even Bill Hunt himself remarks (even knowing that this is a Día de los Inocentes joke), that after so many years and experience in the medium, he can assure that it's "the real deal".

Anyway, we're satisfied to see how our joke has fooled even the biggest veterans in the profession and, obviously, we're most happy to see it made Universal USA go ahead and confirm definitely that Back to the Future will come out this year, something that all are looking forward to – even at ZonaDVD.

Then again, if the fake 3-D short from our joke ends up being included, we'll have to pick up our jaws from the floor.

The part that screams fake to me is, they use "Academy Award Winner" and then use "Oscar Winner" on the next line...wouldn't you remain consistant?

We all know it's coming this yr, but I am glad it's not the package in that ad. I'm a defender of The Bits but that's just a lazy mistake on their part.

Universal wanted the sequel and they had to figure out what to do with how they ended it. Notice they spent about 15 minutes in 2015 and the rest of the time in 1955/1985

Sounds like they were just covering their ass to me. :)

I'm sure any mention of it will quickly be erased soon enough like it never happened.

Bill added a lazy update that a) indicates that he hasn't looked very closely at the image, since he says it's watermarked by BTTF.com and not zonadvd, which it clearly is, and b) inadvertently suggests the fault lies in a lazy Universal Home Entertainment rep who just knows the titles are coming and didn't bother to actually verify the authenticity of the actual adsheet.

Ahh, what drama. Check out this BTTF.com write up which is good. It shows how they assembled it.

There will never be a part IV nor any prequels.

I'm not ruling out the eventual re-make, however.

Zemeckis and gale have made it very clear when people ask them about rumors of sequal or a remake one day, that there will never be any Remakes of the back to the future movies while they are still breathing. lol

Shame. I was looking forward to an "urban" remake of BTTF.

I'm sure Sam Worthington is already up for the role of Marty.

Or worse - Shia.

Zac Efron was attached to the rumors last year about a BTTF remake. He debunked them. Someone saw a pic of him next to his DeLorean since he's a hardcore fan and the internet went bonkers.

About 8 or so years back there was a rampant internet rumor about Frankie Muniz playing Marty in a potential remake. Nothing ever came of that, though.

Thank God.

Re: Back to the Future Trilogy ------> 2010?

I've had the trilogy since it first came out and, because it had new features, I got the recently released special edition of the first movie. The film and menus are the same, but it has the Back To The Future ride footage, which is nice since I was never able to go on the ride before it was closed down. The sort of holographic cover is nice, too, but I don't think I'll get parts 2 and 3 since there aren't any new features that the old releases don't have. I can't wait for the blu-rays to come out. The picture quality will be just amazing. This and Star Wars are my two big wants on blu-ray.

JimRochester 01-07-10 08:33 PM

Re: Back to the Future Trilogy ------> 2010?

^ the ride on dvd would probably be better than the real ride. They normally don't bother me but that ride shook the crap out of me. A couple times I thought I was going to lose it.
