I thought Shout was only doing four Shaw boxes. Or was five the original plan? Or more? Good mix of films in that box regardless. Just picked up Vol. 3 and 4 in the recent Target ‘b2g1’ sale, so this one will be a long ways off for my budget.

Shawscope v.3 and Shout's Ti Lung/David Chiang box pretty much knocked out all my remaining high priority Shaw martial arts wants. I'm not sure I can go in on yet another box, especially one made up of B and C tier swordplay titles. It's cool that all of these are getting released in the US for (I think) the first time, but at a certain point I'm just never going to get through all of these.

I noticed a couple of other new releases as well: MODEL HOUSE and FORMOSA BETRAYED. The first is a 2024 Shout Studios horror movie about bikini models trapped in a house with stalker fans or something that looks kinda formula. The second is a 2009 true-life period political thriller that got modestly ok reviews when it came out but basically went DTV (especially with the Dawson’s Creek guy in the lead). Haven’t seen it, but it’s cool that Shout would release a movie decidedly pro-Taiwan and anti-China views in the current political climate. Can’t really imagine there’s much of an audience for it, though.

I love Vampires but I'd have a hard time buying it again just for the 4k picture upgrade.

Interested in The Last Voyage of the Demeter once it drops in price. It would be a blind buy but the trailer looked interesting.

I saw The Last Voyage of the Demeter in the theater when it came out. While an interesting take on the vampire lore, it's not the kind of movie I would seek to own.

I’ll spring for the Shaw set some day on sale, but jeezus can’t any of these companies do a box of something besides the martial arts films, even just for a breather? As resilient as the movies have been over the decades, outside of a handful of ‘key’ titles, I doubt there are enough fans of any individual titles in a lot of these sets to make single editions very profitable, whereas bundling them together in pretty boxes and tossing in a bunch of special features seems to do the trick. Arrow did break Shawscope Vol. 1 into three smaller sets (minus one film), but somehow I don’t picture Shout getting around to it. I also think these multi-film sets appeal – perhaps even visually (they do look nice lined up on the shelf) – to folks who are maybe less familiar overall with the Shaw films, or only vaguely recall them from bad tv prints or dodgy VHS tapes and whatnot. On a related note, I got Shout’s GOLDEN HARVEST: SHOOTING STARS for a really good price from the Canadian company Unobstructed View over the holidays, and while waiting for it to ship, I stumbled across some complaints online about how difficult it is to get the discs to slide out of the box. Boy, they weren’t kidding! :lol: It’s quite the workout. The discs are fine because they’re in the cases, but those cases have absolutely zero wiggle room once they’re in the box. Whole lotta shakin’! Not sure if it’s the same story with their other GH box set, but I’ll still grab it eventually regardless, I’m sure. |

That wouldn’t surprise me at this point. The DVD era saw a large number of them released on disc in North America but it did seem like the novelty wore off eventually, and now that we’re in this niche-y Blu-ray era I have to think a lot of rights holders (even beyond HK) probably can’t ask for the kind of money they got back in the day. I suppose if that means we’ll keep getting Shaw boxes for a while, I’m cool with it.

I love these movies, but after the first wave of Shout boxes and 3 Shawscope sets (not to mention all of the various singles from 88, Eureka, etc.) my want list is pretty much tapped out. At this point I'll probably just skip vols. 5&6, but I know volume 7 will have some movie I've forgotten about that I'll want and then the completionist in me will be forced to go back and get the boxes I missed.
