No indication of a "new HD transfer" for Brotherhood of the Wolf leads me to assume that one will recycle the cruddy transfer from prior releases. :(

"The Pianist" is another film where I bought a Canadian DVD (I think it was Canadian) with more features than the US version. An excellent movie, but grueling to watch. "State and Main" is one of those movies I think about when I see the "where's the blu-ray?" threads. It's a very enjoyable film. "Chamber of Horrors" has always been a favorite, -I love Patrick O'Neal's performance as the villain. I missed a chance to get it on a double-feature DVD with another film. We'll see if they can do anything with it, -perhaps a commentary.

We'll see. I had the 3-disc Canadian DVD which was an excellent package for that time. I waited for years for a US blu-ray release, -it seemed like a no-brainer. I ended up getting the Korean Director's cut (Region A compatible) and I thought it was satisfactory. I'd love to see a remastered version with updated supplements, -I would think Dacascos would make himself available.

Yeah, the Canadian one has a really bad transfer. I even have the French Region 2 barebones release of it, and the transfer is only marginally better.

Might get the remake of House of Wax.

Happy to see The Pianist and State and Main announced. Nice surprises.

All those look great. I wonder which cut or multiple cuts on Brotherhood. I have some Blu-ray from somewhere. Looks like this...

State and Main is hilarious. A wildly underrated satire.

^ it’s ok, but Mamet just wasn’t right for a mostly comedy. It seemed out of place for him and liked not loved. Spartan, GGGR, Redbelt, Spanish Prisoner, fucking Hackman in Heist were masterful. House of Games! Haven’t seen Oleanna yet, but think I have on something. I love his stuff. Mamet is genius to me. His new actors, his regulars, just read and act his words so masterfully. People you don’t expect, Steve Martin in SP, Tim Allen in Redbelt. Just perfect.

Oleanna is weird. It's basically an anti-MeToo screed made long before MeToo was a thing. The play was written in the wake of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas scandal, and it feels like Mamet was terrified that a day would eventually come when other women might get fed up with being sexually harassed and would call men out on their behavior. So he decided that he needed to pre-emptively put all those lying b*tches back in their place before that could happen. It's a profoundly misogynistic play/movie.

I’m not sure how he wasn’t the right person to direct his own screenplay. |

I assume you’re aware that Mamet also wrote State and Main. You’re post makes it sound like the studio just hired the wrong director for a comedy.

Try Wag the Dog. Mamet didn’t direct it, but he wrote it. It’s a damn funny comedy and biting political satire.

In that arena as well as couple forays into action with mostly Spartan, but Redbelt too. All those are genius. His comical stuff...eh. |

I thought Ronin was definitely in Mamet style, there are tons of dialogue that wouldn’t be used in a straight forward film like Ronin. The Grasshopper explanation, “You're great in the locker room and your reflexes might die hard, but you're weak when you put your spikes on,” “everyone’s your brother til the rent comes due”

hated WtD. With De Niro and Hoffman? Not even close to a perfect Mamet dialogue intriguing movie. I don’t even consider it in his pantheon since it’s was a big budget govt secrets movie that did not work for me at all. Mamet is best in these con game type shenanigans with these one or two intriguing character and his usual motley crew, Rebecca Pidgeon, Ricky Jay, Bill Macy, Joe Mantegna. I’ve loved American Buffalo. Ronin was a little different. He wrote, but def not in his style. The twists and turns, yes, the greatness of De Niro, perhaps. Trying to find answers in Homicide or the pressures of stock trading and/or illegal stock trading in GGGR or Heist! Love that Hackman gem.
