I really don't expect the film transfer to look much better on Black Christmas. That was an extremely low-budget slasher and no restoration is going to change that fact.

The Negative was believed to be lost so it's cool Shout was able to find it. It won't be pristine but it should be the best it has ever looked.

Off topic, but if you guys love movies (and can tolerate Smith and a good deal of sexual innuendo and profanity), I highly recommend that podcast.

So the question is, who's Brandon Bentley and what's he done to qualify as an "expert" on such a broad subject? Apparently very little, and Shout is indulging in the same hyperbole too often afforded previous "experts" on Hong Kong cinema in order to make supplement listings seem more scholarly than they really are. By his own admission (at that "other" forum, after some googling) Bentley wouldn't qualify himself as an "Asian film expert" so much as an "obsessive fan" of this particular film, and since he was involved in at least one supplement on the earlier Big Boss release and his passion for the film is undeniable, that probably explains Shout throwing him this bone. Beyond that he was the co-host of a defunct, low-viewed, cookie-cutter movie review series on YouTube. Of 39 videos posted before the channel went dormant a couple of years ago, only one featured an Asian film: The Big Boss (go figure). While his lifelong love for the picture is evident there, the knowledge imparted is entirely commonplace, although noobs and millennials may find it more palatable when it's served to them by someone who seems like one of their own, I suppose. Shout undoubtedly felt compelled to add something new to justify the double-dip (or triple, or quadruple, depending on how many of their prior iterations one owns), but finding anything "new" on The Big Boss at this point is pretty tough these days, so we gets what we gets.

It's still a little odd to me how low the barrier seems to be set when it comes to expertise on Hong Kong cinema specifically, and how willing U.S. distributors are to inflate the bona fides of what are essentially super-fan contributors to "experts" in the broader Asian cinema when they almost never are. Japanese films get Donald Richie, Tony Rayns, Stephen Prince, David Bordwell or the Midnight Eye guys. Hong Kong movies get a fella who was on YouTube that time. Serious scholars/historians of Hong Kong cinema are out there -- including Bordwell, among others -- but they so rarely seem to be asked to contribute, or maybe they're just more comfortable with the lower profile of books and blogs? Or maybe it's all tied to the low-brow perception of Hong Kong movies as a kind of scrappy underdog niche of world cinema with an often numbingly combative western fanbase. Bentley at least seems to aim above that crowd, which is noteworthy. Perhaps this is a one-off for him, or maybe he'll become a new go-to guy for this kind of thing given an opportunity to compile and present thorough research. At least they didn't exhume Ric Meyers, so there's that.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

By the way, I know most here don't purchase titles off the Shout website due to the high cost, plus shipping. But, I purchased Dreamscape and To Live and Die in LA off there recently and I got both titles along with the free posters almost 20 days early from street date. The quick shipping is amazing. But, you are paying a premium for it.

I used my Citi Mastercard to buy it from there and you can go to this website:

https://www.citipricerewind.com/

and register your purchases no matter where you bought it. They will search for a cheaper price and eventually credit the difference back to your card. So I've gotten credited back anywhere from $4-7 each from these Shout purchases because Citi found it cheaper.

Just throwing it out there for those with a Citi card. I've purchased 4 titles in the last few months and have gotten reimbursement credits for each.

Curious on the extras for Robo 2. There is also an independent Robo-Doc being worked on right now.

I don't recall much from Robocop 3. All I recall was that it was PG-13, No Weller and was the worst reviewed of the 3 movies. I remember loving Robocop 2. It was another hard R and extremely violent movie.

But, I might whore myself out and get 3 since I am always impressed what Shout does with their titles no matter the quality of the movie.

Stoked about Robocop 2! I hope they interview Frank Miller for both movies though. Speaking of which, the Frank Miller Robocop Omnibus is being released this month. It's his scripts of Robocop 2 and 3 in comic book form.

I've got my pre-order in https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Fran...obocop+omnibus

Going back to Shout Factory, I'm still waiting for Black Christmas to arrive. It got good marks at DVDbeaver

I too could be very interested in Robocop 2 if the transfer is an improvement and the extras are worthy. I've held off buying the current bare bones blu-ray.

My actual experience with Robocop 3 actually stated with the Amiga computer game, which was actually very solid. A first gen FPS with 3D graphics. Imagine my surprise when I finally saw the movie and realized it really did have a robo ninja and jet packs. I'll be skipping that one no matter what extras they tag on to that turd.

Kid Solid Snake was bored as shit from Robocop 3. It did make a cool action figure though. Damn thing was heavy too. Like a foot tall or more. Could replace his forearm for that massive gun of his. Gun in his leg. Had some phrases it said. Loved that toy as a kid.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I'm in for both Robocop 2 and Robocop 3. I like the second film even though it's definitely not as good as the original. It falls into that category of being so bad it's good. The third is pretty bad but does have some pretty comical moments and since I'll have the others (including the remake) I'll get it to complete my collection. Too bad that there's not a new version of the original film but I guess the one from Fox/MGM is decent enough.

Isn't the recent "re-mastered" BD of the original Robocop one of the best catalog title releases, ever? Seems like it would be all but impossible to top short of creating a new box set with these Shout! releases.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

It's a pretty good release. It'd just be nice to have them all under the same banner and maybe a box set or something. The presentation is fine but I'm sure there are more extras that could be dug up for a new edition and while it's a minor thing I like that Scream Factory commissions new artwork for their releases while also retaining original artwork for most films. Mostly just some small things that would make a new edition cool to go with the two sequels in my opinion but not a huge deal that we aren't getting one. I'm sure it was easier to license the two sequels compared to the original too since neither is as popular and there was likely never going to be releases beyond the bare bones discs we've already gotten from Fox.
