Holy shit, I am hard right now.
I really hope these BD transfers are "tolerable." I'd also like to see a Toxic Avenger boxset done correctly on BD, but the odds of that are pretty slim.
Actually, I take that back. The odds are in favor of having a perfect Toxic Avenger boxset being announced for BD, but when released, extras previously announced are missing and a specific sequel will contain the R-rated cut.

Oh well, I made $2 selling my Limited Edition version of the Poultrygeist on Amazon... so the "upgrade" is free. Hopefully Class of Nuke Em High turns out better (the DVD is SHIT), but I'm tempted to cancel my order for the Tromeo & Juliet BD as I already have the excellent Anniversary Edition of that one.
I honestly was really hoping this would have a lot of heavy cheap grain with deeper color (I wasn't expecting fine detail from their cheap 35mm stock)... but it really DOES look like the DVD.

They couldn't strike an HD transfer from the 35mm print? Laaaaaaazy.
I really hope their future BD releases aren't just the DVD transfers upconverted to 1080, I really don't.
If that's the case, who can we convince they need to buy the Troma library and give it proper justice?
[Oh, I never bought Poultrygeist, so I'll pick up the BD if I can score it around the $10 range.]

Doing a search on the net, I found this review. The guy who wrote this said that the transfer isn't too bad. We'll see on tuesday.

Forgot that I had the Poultrygeist BD on my Netflix queue so I was surprised when I got an e-mail notice yesterday saying it shipped.
Guess what? The BD doesn't play on my PS3. Every other BD I just tested with does, but not this one.
Fan-fucking-tastic. Way to go Troma. Way to fucking go.

Poultrygeist played on my PS3 too. Hopefully it's an isolated problem.

It just wouldn't read, the PS3 wouldn't recognize the disc.
I tried various BDs that were on my stand (Crank, X-Men trilogy, Black Dynamite, etc) to see if they would read. All worked just fine.
Poultrygeist is the first BD (out of over 100+ I've put into my PS3) that has had issues.
I've already reported the issue to Netflix and have a replacement disc shipping today.

re: Troma on Blu-ray
I got it from Amazon today and it came in a standard blue case... which I thought was kind of lame because all of the advertising showed a green case. Laame.
I actually think the picture is alright in motion... certainly better than the DVD (especially in the area of compression) but mediocre, which is actually more than I expect from Troma. Hell, isn't the Poultrygeist DVD their one and only anamorphic disc? More disappointed in the audio however... this deserved to be in 5.1.

re: Troma on Blu-ray
Finally got to spend the past few hours after work watching the film for the first time and going through most of the video based extras. I ended up enjoying the flick and preferred it over Troma's last major outing Citizen Toxie (which I really didn't like).
I never saw the DVD, but I'll mostly agree with Adam's comments. While it doesn't look as bad as some BDs I own (i.e. Dog Soldiers and National Lampoon's Van Wilder); the BD looks very hazy, soft, and lacks detail. I honestly don't think an HD (or, dare I say it, 2K) master of this film exists. Probably because Troma relatively has no money. With that aside, the transfer is passable, but it makes me get a nauseous feeling of what the rest of Troma's BD output is going to look like. This is a film that was just put together in the past few years and looks pretty bad. It makes me worry what the rest of their library, especially their second release in a few weeks will look like. Now I'm not asking for Troma to go through and restore their entire library, I just want transfers derived from their original elements, not from a VHS tape or SD master.
Also, not a big fan of a lossy track on a BD. Now, I'm not asking for 7.1 DTS-HD MA surround sound; but how much could it cost to even throw in a PCM 2.0 track?
Despite the BD's audio and video shortcomings, I will give Troma props on converting all of the extras to AVC (even if all the bonus material is SD). Being able to access the menus during ALL of the content on the disc is a huge plus and I wish more studios would follow suit.
I'm hoping Poultrygeist was just Troma testing the waters of what could be done on Blu-ray and that the next few releases will surprise us.
Wait, what am I saying? My expectations are pretty low as this is Troma. They don't really give a shit about their video output, so what am I even asking for?

re: Troma on Blu-ray
LOL. I love the Blu-ray introduction to Poultrygeist. I think the film actually looks great in HD on my 32" 1080p set that I'm watching right now. It actually looks just how I'd expect it to look. You can definitely tell the colors are better if anything. I'll give this one to them. Definitely far from the worst BD I've seen. It's certainly dirty for a relatively new film but that just adds to the charm, lol. This must've been shot on the lowest of the low quality 35MM.
I just got a notice from Amazon that Class of Nuke Em High has been delayed until May. That's my favorite Troma film next to Tromeo and Juliet (which I also have preordered) so hopefully it's up to snuff.

There has been alot of people out there in the Internet talking shit
about the Poultrygeist Bluray, saying it was an up-convert from the
DVD. We'll my first thought is get a better TV. My second thought is
sit down and watch the HI-DEF version (somehow we had reviews of the
quality before we even made the discs). My third thought is this picture
of Toxie holding the HD D5 master made from the 35mm materials.

The Poutlrygeist Bluray has a great fucking picture! Anyone who says we did an up-convert from DVD can pay the 35mm - HD transfer bill!

I would've preferred Toxie giving us the finger as he pointed to a RAID server containing what should've been a 2K transfer.
A D5 Master? Really? Someone holding a D5 Master would've been exciting about a low budget movie being transferred to DVD in 2000, but not a Blu-ray in 2010. While I should probably be excited that Troma is using some sort of HD master for Blu-ray (or just surprised they even have made a single HD master in the first place), I just feel Troma's response is just... weak.
In theory, a film shot in 35mm should look better than anything shot in HD. However, this just shows that post could change everything. It's kind of crazy that an independent film like The Signal, shot on nearly ninth of the budget of Poultrygeist using the Canon XL-H1 camera looks far superior to a film shot in 35mm.

Yeah, but if it looks like crap, it looks like crap. I'm glad Adam didn't just give the film a higher PQ review because it was Troma's first BD release Good to see DVDTalk doesn't suck up to the studios to get more releases and is willing to let a bad review get a bad review.
