Anyone ever gotten a 'copyright violation' message?

A heads up, sort of. Anyone have their player refuse to play a blu-ray disc and pop up a message saying "Copyright violation" ?

My Panasonic DMP-BD35 did this when my wife tried to set up and play the Marvel animated New Avengers for our son.

We've been borrowing a lot of movies (DVDs and BRs) from our local library the past few months. Normally (being the household tech person) I set up the player for my wife and son when they want to watch something. Part of that is checking the discs and cleaning them when necessary (which it usually is).

This time, however, my wife got the player ready. So I ejected the disc, and glanced at the back, where... sure enough... it was all smeared up, presumably by the greasy fingers of the previous careless borrower.

I wiped it clean on my pant leg (cotton jeans) and reinserted it, where proceeded to load normally and played without further problem.

I'm thinking library discs (and rentals) ought to have a label equivalent of the old "Be Kind, Rewind" sticker on borrowed/rented VHS tapes.

Maybe something like "Don't be mean, keep clean."

Panasonic 30/35/50/55 tend to display this message when the disc is dirty. People spend all sorts of time hunting down the latest firmware... when it's just a smudge.

Wow, I'm just amazed that you can borrow Blu-rays from the library. I'm not even sure our local library has DVDs.

Re: Anyone ever gotten a 'copyright violation' message?

Unfortunately, many persons who rent DVD's and Blu-rays, whether it be from the local library or from Netflix, feel they can treat their discs without a care in the world because the fingerprints, scratches, dried food remnants and other damage they leave on the discs will be forgiven by the rental agency as "normal wear," and it is! If it doesn't belong to you, and replacing it will not cost you anything when it is damaged, why should you care? (Because you are supposedly a mature, responsible, accountable human being, maybe?) In theory, if all of us were respectful of the merchandise we are "borrowing" to view, no one down the line would have any issues about non-playable discs (and I've had my share). If a kid handles a rental disc, or a dog grabs one in his teeth, it should be the responsibility of the renter to replace the damaged disc, but companies like Netflix are too worried they will lose subscribers if they insist upon ruined DVD's, even though they have theoretically checked each disc when it is returned. Then there are the "missing" ones (yeah, the Post Office loses a few rentals over the course of a year, but really, an awful lot of reported "lost" discs must simply become part of a renter's library).
