Re: "Inglorious Basterds" 12/15 !
Actually, like I said earlier, good white subs always have a slight black outline around the letters to distinguish them on a white background - most yellow subs aren't outlined so, while it's rare, they get lost if there's a yellow background. It's all moot anyway, as these are burnt-in subs and it's not nearly as bad and annoying as yellow subs on a B&W film - I actually can't even watch those.

That's the weakest argument ever and completely illogical. If you're gonna turn a blind eye to criticism just because "that's what the director intended", then why criticize any movie ever? Why do you criticize Transformers2? After all, it's just what Michael Bay intended.

What'd I do to get up your ass? Not like a subtitle's color? The fact that you're bugged by my opinion is far more pathetic than my opinion, which I admit is pathetic in it's nit-pickyness - but not nearly as bad as some of the OCD shit that goes on around here.

The subs were definitely 100% yellow in theaters. They didn't bother me. They won't bother me when I buy the Blu-ray, either. I'll just enjoy the movie for how fucking awesome it is and not worry about what COLOR text is on a screen.

My problem with yellow is if they are the chyron (sp?) video type that look terrible... If they are what was burned into the film, then yellow is fine with me.. I forgot what color they were.

the black outline around the white lettering is utterly necesary, but so few actual subtitling companies implement this that yes, white on white backgrounds are a royal pain. Criterion, Masters of Cinema DVD's / blurays are the benchmark on how subtitling should be done - Sony's yellow subs on DVD's are the worst bar none

Can't wait to see this movie. Could care less about the color of the subtitles.

No, it's not the weakest argument- just one you misunderstand. His point does not equate to "you can't criticize Transformers 2", it equates to "you can't criticize a Blu-ray of Transformers 2 that accurately represents the film for it's job of representing the film".

Right. Exactly the point. If it's a directorial choice, it's not above criticism any more than any other directorial choice. However, this would also mean that the BD is getting it right, in which case, the BD would be above criticism as an accurate representation of the directorial choice you may consider to be a poor one.

how do subs work anyway?
i don't understand why they aren't generated by the player rather than merely displayed. in other words, the disc holds the words, but the player can display those words in any manner the user tells it to.
you should be able to pick the font type, the font size, the font color and whether or not there's an outline color. that should be minimum options for subs. maybe placement and 4:3, 16:9 screen layouts also.
the way subs are now is ridiculous.

Really? If anything. I'd prefer my subs underneath the frame of the picture if allowed to.
Font size? Color? outlining? What the hell, man? Big fucking deal. For the most part a lot films have good subtitle quality and placement. I can't believe we're arguing about this.

Blu-rays have a protected video path, meaning subtitles cannot be repositioned unless they want you to.
Here's a good argument for placing subtitles within the movie frame:

Well, like I said earlier, in this case, the subs are not player-generated but are burnt into the image and part of the video transfer, so it's all moot.

That R2 BD Packaging is sweet.
If it wasn't for a $15 BB Gift Card I got recently, I probably would've got that.
