Will blu ray ever get rid of those hideous blue cases?

sad to say thats really one of the main reasons I haven't started collecting blu ray's yet. Criterion has caught on but everything else besides certain box sets come in terrible packaging.

I guess they don't think people will recognize the difference between blu ray and dvd, even though anyone with half a brain would notice the size difference in the casing and would, you know, BE AWARE OF WHAT THEY'RE PURCHASING. I guess most companies assume the best way let people know they are buying blu ray discs is by putting them in BIG BLUE CASES.

Sometimes I buy green bananas and days later they seem to mysteriously disappear. So I stopped buying bananas.

I asked the same thing about DVDs and black boxes. Ten years later they're still in black cases! WTF?!

I like the blu cases. I just wish the case companies would actually sell replacement cases direct, so you could buy accurate cases for DVDs. I've seen replacement blu cases online and they're generally not the right kind (most people seem to sell Sony-style, flat, latched ones rather than the rounder Warner-style ones) and many don't even have the blu logo stamped on them.

Personally I prefer the blu ray cases as well. I think the blue is pretty sharp looking and with the cases being a little thinner it does conserve me a little bit of space.

The blue cases are sexy. Much better then those old boring, big black ones.

You can't be serious. The color of the case (which is standard) has prevented you from owning some of your favorite films is full HD?

I prefer the blu cases and even swapped a few dvd's into custom made blu cases I bought at a local shop.

Re: Will blu ray ever get rid of those hideous blue cases?

sorry maybe I should have been a little more specific. It's not the fact that the cases themselves are blue, it's the fact that each case has an inch long blue border across the top of each case for the sole purpose of specifying that what you're buying is indeed Blu Ray. I don't burn dvd's that I want to own for the same reason the blu ray packaging turns me off. because I like covers, packaging, insert's slip cover's etc. I don't need a 5 by 1 inch blue border across the top to let me know what I'm buying. it's ugly. I like the artwork and the cover. It's like if you bought a Beatles Sgt Pepper's LP and instead of that iconic cover being shown in full, there's a big black LP strip across 20 % of the cover that says "THIS IS A RECORD".

It's just a major turn off for me. I want the cover, not the big blue advertisement for blu ray.

They don't bother me one bit. In fact I rather like the aesthetic of it, the way it makes everything on my shelf seem uniform. If anything I wish the Criterions came in blue keepcases as well so they'd fit in.

Re: Will blu ray ever get rid of those hideous blue cases?

While sometimes the top can look like a bad border that clashes with the cover, I like Blu cases because there's something slightly off-beat about them. They stand out, look kind of advanced, and there's the random chance the cover will be complemented by the blue border and add to the appeal. Doesn't happen often, though. The collector's edition of Casino Royale, Twister and Braveheart are covers that look good with the border.

I like the cases and well. I think I'm going to go out and buy a few movies now to make up for your foolishness.

Well, one thing I like about the top border is that it allows them to place a security sticker over the top that doesn't stick to the cover art. With DVDs, if the cover art isn't lined up just right, sometimes the sticker can get stuck directly onto it, making it difficult to remove the sticker without stripping a little of the artwork.

Yea, but mine usually strip off part of the logo on the case!

You'll have to blame the format war for that big chunk of blu banner on the top of the case. They had to distinguish their HD disc from that other HD disc and the competitors decided to do it with a big color bar above the artwork. If Blu lasts a while, it may phase out.

To each their own but I care what's inside the case rather than the color or design on the front of the case.

I like the cases. The only ones I really don't care for are the Warner books.

Re: Will blu ray ever get rid of those hideous blue cases?

I like the Blu cases. Can't see them going by the wayside anytime soon, as they help to distinguish the format from DVD. Occasional diversions from the color blue (like the green case with the recent Hulk film) are welcome as well, just don't get carried away. My film library doesn't need to look like the rainbow on a box of Lucky Charms.
