Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

OK so recently I gave Star Trek a try again and I did actually like it.

I am interested in the films, but wasn't sure if I should get the set that was just release.

Here are a few questions I wanted to ask....

What films from the first set have director's cuts?
Are the director's cuts better?
It appears all the the extras, minus the director's cut specific stuff, made it over is that true?
What about the other films (same questions as above)?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Read the reviews here. I' m pretty sure all your questions will be answered.

As for the other films...check a thread that was just created yesterday. New films were announced.

Re: Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

No director cuts in the Blu-ray Disc sets because some of the new special effects were rendered in standard-defintion 480p. Paramount is having the team responsible for these effects re-render them in high-definition 1080p.

When these director cuts end up on Blu-ray Disc, they will have different extras then the sets out now.

Thanks for the info. Which of the films have director's cuts? I am new to the franchise and don't know the answer.

These are the only two:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan

As far as I'm aware, there's been no confirmation that Paramount has initiated that.

Re: Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

Three of the original crew Trek films have director's cuts: The Motion Picture (I), the Wrath of Khan (II), and The Undiscovered Country (VI). Of the three, I actually prefer the theatrical cuts of I and VI. The DC of II is better, but the difference isn't day and night. In other words, you could get the new current set without missing too much. If you just want to dip your toe into the waters, you could get the three movie set, and that way you wouldn't have to bother with the two worst original crew films, I and V. But you'd be missing out on VI, which is as good as II.

That is a fair analysis.

Re: Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

I personally think people dont always give enough credit to TMP and FF
true they have their flaws, but these movies have some really great things to them.
as many others have pointed out there are scenes inFF that capture the spirt and chemistry of the The orginal series that some of the other movies didnt.

i love all the movies in the series true II and VI are the best but there is a lot to be said for TMP and FF

^ Agree. 1 and 5 get too much flack, they both have some really good moments.

I think 6 is the best of the bunch, yes, even better than Khan.

I and V definitely have good parts, but they are by no means good films on the whole. And yes I think I've misjudged them only to rewatch them and come back to the same conclusion.

I must admit as much praise as II gets, rewatching it on the big screen recently with a much appreciative fan base, I couldn't tell if they were laughing at it or with it - there are some classic lines the crowd lapped it up but some of the stunt work, acting from the extras and costumes can't hide it's an '80's movie - it's fun, very entertaining and it's kind of tongue in cheek.

The pleasures of I and V are best appreciated by long standing fans of the series who can appreciate some of the smaller nuances tucked away within the two films, which are not good on the whole. I certainly wouldn't recommend them to someone who has never seen a ST movie before.

I think you hit it right on the head here. I vacillate between II and VI being the best.

Re: Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

Why are II and IV now available for purchase individually, but I and III are not. Did I miss something?

You missed that V isn't available for individual purchase either, though I know a lot of people wish they could forget about Part V!
BTW, they also released VI and VIII by themselves as well....

I'm guessing the reason they are only selling the "even-numbered" movies separately is due to the popular opinion that the "even-numbered" films were better, and maybe they also have some previous sales data from past VHS/DVD releases that influenced their decision....

If you don't want to buy the whole I-VI Original Crew collection, you can get III (along with II and IV) in the "Trilogy" set...

Re: Question about Star Trek Blu-Rays...

I just bought both film sets yesterday and have checked out ST II, IV, VII, & VIII so far. They look great. Way better than the DVD's IMO. I am glad I splurged a little and got both sets. Wish the new film would come out now instead of Nov. The trailers on the next generation movies say the new film is available now on DVD and BD. Guess they planned on releasing it earlier at some point and changed their mind or the next gen movies came out sooner than they originally planned.
