From DVD Times:
Warner Home Video have announced the US DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of North by Northwest (50th Anniversary Edition) on 3rd November 2009. For this release Alfred Hitchcock's action packed espionage caper starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason has been newly remastered in 1080p from original VistaVision film elements.
The arrival of North by Northwest on Blu-ray is a landmark event in home video history, as it marks the very first of the famed director’s films to become available on this state-of-the-art format. Accordingly, the film has received a meticulous restoration and remastering especially for this occasion with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging scanning the original VistaVision production elements in 8K resolution. The resulting presentation reveals a depth of field and clarity never before possible, only serving to heighten every thrill-packed moment of this beloved classic.
North by Northwest is priced at $34.99 SRP on Blu-ray (with book packaging) and $24.98 SRP on Special Edition DVD. Both versions boast two new documentaries. The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style consists of interviews, clips, and behind-the-scenes footage to reveal what defines the unmistakable Hitchcock style. In North by Northwest: One for the Ages today’s top directors Guillermo del Toro, William Friedkin, Curtis Hanson, and Francis Lawrence share their interpretations on the film’s importance and its influence on their own work. The Blu-ray Book also contains 44 pages full of photos, film facts and ‘insider information.’

Awesome ... one of my favorite movies. I've avoided Digibook packaging so far (hoping for "normal" releases later on movies I like, but aren't must-have-right-away), but I'll live with it for this movie.

Warner!? I thought "NBNW" was Universal. Don't fuck up the PQ as per WB.

Who is Lowry? And was he one of the people who remastered a few of Hitchcock's films that were rereleased theatrically about 10-15 years ago? Such as "Vertigo". Terrific job if so. I saw them on a huge screen with a near sold out crowed. It was a very cool experience. Can't wait for my favorite AH film to come out on BD, "Rear Window".

Obviously the BD can't display anything close to 8K resolution. However, scanning at 8K and doing restoration/remastering at that level bodes much better for a virtually flawless image when downsampled to 1080p.

Lowry Digital is the premiere name in digital remasters: http://www.lowrydigital.com/filmography.html
Quite a bit of the time when you see threads where people are startled by how amazing a particular catalog title looks, it's Lowry that's behind it.

Given that it was one of their first restorations, they probably went too far with the DNR on it (which would show more on the BD than on the DVD) like they did for Citizen Kane. So, it's good to hear that it was redone.

Re: North by Northwest: 11/3/09
Don't get me wrong, I think all films should get scanned at the highest possible resolution, but I think the difference between 8k and 4K (which is what studios normally scan their IP's at) will have no impact on how the Blu-ray looks. It makes sense to do it for theatrical re-releases or eventual higher resolution home video formats, so I'm all for it.
