It's not about being new, it's about room to improve - a 5/5 means that there was nothing wrong with the movie and that it could not improve in any way, which is absolute nonsense. If you agree that the movie could not be improved on, well then you have no business reviewing movies.

I guess I just see it as a good movie instead of a great one. I suppose that with so many people actually liking drivel like Transformers, it's no surprise that Trek is seen as a masterpiece by comparison.

I wonder how many four star reviews Ebert has given. Or anyone else for that matter. Reserving them for "perfect movies" is ridiculous. Maybe if it was a 100 point scale.

The snow monster scene, the puffy hands scene, the beaming-from-a-planet-onto-a-ship-in-mid-warp-a-hundred-light-years-away-when-they-don't-even-know-where-it-is scene, Scotty trapped in the cooling pipes, and other pieces of lazy scripting and pointless nonsense really hold this movie back from greatness.
I liked the Star Trek reboot. I really did. But a 5-star masterpiece? No way.

a movie doesn't have to be "perfect" to get a 5/5
North by Northwest gets a 5/5 from me despite the little kid plugging his ears before the gun shot at Mount Rushmore.

I don't really mind the monsters, even if it's a little Star Warsy. Star Trek could use a few big monsters.
The transporter thing, though, was just cringe-inducing. That scene would have played much better if Scotty had had some kind of souped-up little warp ship that they could use to catch up with the Enterprise.

I don't think perfection is necessarily required. No movie is absolutely perfect. However, a 5-star rating generally connotes something of a "masterpiece" level.

Don't get me wrong, I don't consider Star Trek a 5/5 movie either, but I can easily see why there are reviewers who would rate it that highly.

I dunno... I would think only a perfect film deserves a perfect score. I just watched North by Northwest last night, thought it was fantastic, but I'd give it 4.5/5. It just wasn't totally flawless, but it's a damn fine film.

So, I just picked up my first Blu Ray, UP, since I had the $10 off coupon at Target and they were selling it for $19.99, so ten bucks for four discs was too good to pass up. Now, I have a $5 Reward Zone cert. and I was thinking there was a BR/DVD combo for Star Trek for some reason, but apparently not. Am I nuts or was I just hoping there was one? I don't even have a player yet, but I figured I could start picking up these combo packs for now and I don't want to have to double dip on the new Star Trek movie.

When I watched the movie for a second time at the dollar theater those scenes didn't bother me at all. The only one that I really didn't care for was the Scotty in the pipes scene, but even then I don't think it hurts the movie that much. The movie itself was fairly light hearted and not ultra serious so that a few silly things fit in without being much of a distraction or breaking the tone of the movie.
I still think the movie would be better without them, but I'm inclined to bump my score up half a star.
Still not 5/5, though.

It's not a perfect film but it's a damn entertaining and good film at that. If it had minus some of that humor that was bit too much it'd be fine. Also...Spock kissing like crazy in those few moments...just weird.

I think a continuity error is more forgivable than something that's been written or conceived poorly (like the snow monster scene). Either the writers and director didn't realize that it would be a mistake, or did and decided to go through with it anyway. Nobody accidentally stages a major special effects scene and has a team of VFX artists animate in elaborate CG monsters by mistake. They planned that scene out, staged it, and executed it. And the result is a dumb piece of filler that shouldn't be in the movie.

Now some of you need to lighten up ... it's Star Trek which has always been filled with goofy stuff!

That's probably why Hitchcock hated using kids, since he couldn't control them like he could everything else. I'm sure that flub bothered him more than anyone else.
