I think what it really is is all the major studios need a serious tech team who knows their shit to quality check the transfers and whatnot before pressing. The impression that I get was that Paramount and Universal had no idea the transfer was that bad, they were just assuming that all their underlings and whatnot knew what they were doing.

I would like to see them pull the old discs, the way Buena Vista is apparently pulling the old Gangs of New York.

Yeah, but the Gladiator re-release in 6 months away. Paramount won't pull early so they will continue to sell the POS version to unsuspecting buyers.

And of course the average buyer doesn't see a film the way we do aka OCD cinephiles we are. Which....I'd have it no other way.

Glad I didn't pick up Gladiator then. I was tempted for $10, but even then i'd be a bit miffed about a re-release.

I'm glad I waited on Gladiator but how will we tell the releases apart? I doubt they'll label it as the "non-shitty transfer edition".

Paid $10 for "Gladiator," so I'm not too pissed. Really hope they do customers right though and offer an exchange program, but I seriously doubt it. I'm glad that they actually decided to fix the problem though, even though it screwed a bunch of us.

Some people liked it, but I thought it had too much DNR and EE. It was also revealed to have been a slightly stretched transfer. It's supposed to be 1.66:1, and it looks like they did that and then stretched it to 1.78:1 or 1.85:1.

Same here plus I'm going to get the rebate for $10 bucks so it's free to me. It does suck though that they did this, here's to hoping for an exchange program for everyone else.

Re: Paramount Announces Sapphire Series (BD) -- Braveheart, Gladiator, Forrest Gump

I bought Gladiator and I'll buy it again when they do the re-release. I love the movie. I am really excited about these releases this year: War Of The Worlds, Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report are some of my favorites. I really wish American Beauty was close to getting released. Hopefully there is something about that in the coming months.

As stated in the original post, it'll likely be advertised as a new release, probably "10th anniversary edition". Why they didn't just wait until this yr...who knows. While they're at it I wish they'd do a 10yr SS release of Almost Famous.

Edit: I am glad a new transfer is coming, certainly unexpected. Better than having to wait 5+ yrs for a new release. Lets see, now if WB can just go back and redo some of those early New Line releases I'd be a happy camper.

the new remastered blu-ray should have discrete 6.1 (DTS-HD MA)sound, but of course that'd be asking too much from Paramount/Universal

Goodfellas is not a horrid transfer (not the best, but its passable). It's just Warner tossing the same disc into new packaging. They've done it before.

I got Gladiator for $15 on sale, haven't watched it yet but I'm hoping they'll do a replacement program for those who own it and are "in the know" about the issues.

I basically got Gladiator for free too, assuming my rebate actually comes. I feel like kind of a hypocrite for doing it but I made almost $15 by selling my other two Gladiator dvds. At least I didn't buy the original GONY.

Re: Paramount Announces Sapphire Series (BD) -- Braveheart, Gladiator, Forrest Gump

I got this one right...finally. I know I mentioned somewhere early on that this big of a title, whether you personally like it or not, was not going to not be replaced/corrected considering how bad the problems seemed to be. I think I said they'd have another version within the year.

Now, I also think I expected it would include a replacement program and I hope something is done for those who got screwed. Like several others, I finally bit when it was around $10 and I can live with it, but I'm not thrilled.

If they just act like they released a weak Sapphire title and had another version planned that ends up with a far superior transfer, that will be a total rip off to all of us who buy blu. And it "should" make the Sapphire line mean crap.

I'm still not thrilled that I had to import Walk the Line because of laziness and not happy Tombstone won't be the Vista release transferred to blu, but the theatrical with fewer extras.

Not good...and someone on this board needs to ante up and buy Miramax and start releasing ASAP. Amelie and Pulp Fiction should be 1 and 2 right out of the gate. Thanks.

Both are already out on Blu-ray....just not in America.

Re: Paramount Announces Sapphire Series (BD) -- Braveheart, Gladiator, Forrest Gump

Those sons of bitches. I have to buy it twice because THEY were too lazy to do it right the FIRST TIME!? GUH. At least I'll have a pristine quality of the film but, holy hell. What a slap in the face. A replacement program should be done and that should be the end of it, but noooooooo. 'Let's sell it AGAIN'.

I know that some say you wouldn't notice it if you didn't know about it, but the stretching bothers me enough where I'd put this second behind Gladiator in blus that I own that need to be fixed. That's taking into consideration that some transfers that aren't top notch may have been due to the age of the film, the way the film was shot, the amount the studio wanted to spend on a catalog title being transferred, etc.

The Truman Show, to me, falls into the human error category like Gladiator imho.

Technically, yes, but none of their releases have the special features found on our SD special editions.

I may cave and get the Aussie Amelie and keep the 2 disc, which I don't like to do, but I've read it may be years until it sees a Region A release.

PF should be at or near the top of the list once the Miramax catalog gets purchased so I "might" wait a little bit longer, but I might cave and get the Danish release.

These two films are in my top 10, so I care more. I don't advocate barebones releases and BD releases missing extras from their "best" US release, but I don't get peeved as much as I do when it's a film that I absolutely love.

The "remastered" Gladiator BD is out in other places. Screencaps:

Looks like everyone who bought the Sapphire release will want to upgrade when this comes out (again) later this year.
