Absolutely LOVE the Daniel Clowes covers!

Can't wait for those and really really looking forward to Robinson Crusoe on Mars Blu-Ray. What a great month.

I'll buy anything Melville, and I'd like both Fuller titles as well.

Definitely going to pick up Army of Shadows and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Seeing the trailers for both and definitely look superb films.

Not sure about Naked Kiss and Shock Corridor and when I saw Broadcast News on Encore, didn't care much for it to be honest.

I may very well have to get those Samuel Fuller films. Although honestly I might just prefer prints of the cover art.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Those Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss upgrades have been rumored for years, glad to finally get confirmation. Robinson Crusoe should look absolutely gorgeous in HD, but I'll probably just stick with a rental during next July's Sci-Fi Challenge rather than upgrade. I'm not sure about the Army of Shadows double-dip either.

Nothing is ever wrong with a rental, but fwiw, Army of Shadows is one of my most wanted upgrades. I can't wait to see those slate grays and blues in hi def!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The extras look a bit light on the Fuller titles, but just having them on Blu-ray is enough to make me happy. I absolutely loathe those ugly Clowes covers though. It seems like Criterion is trying too hard these days to target the younger hipster crowd with their cover art.

I'm in for pretty much all of these.

Agreed about the Fuller covers though - they're horrendous and completely misrepresent the mood of the films. So much potential, squandered.

Especially Naked Kiss - showing Towers' bald head on the cover ruins one of the most arresting sequences in the whole film.

I love Clowes, so I dig the covers. I hardly think hipsters have any idea who Fuller is, so I don't really think Criterion is going for trying to target that demo.

Exactly! Criterion seems to think (perhaps correctly, sad as it may be) that the only way to market old, B & W Hollywood films to a younger audience is by enlisting fashionable artists with a hipster cache to design attention-grabbing, splashy packaging that has almost nothing to do with the actual films they're supposed to represent.

I'm a huge Fuller fan and think that those covers are atrocious and completely misrepresent the films. So please, don't let that terrible artwork sway you from checking them out.

I've never associated Clowes with the hipster scene. His work is far too interesting for that.

I also don't like the Clowes covers, but I'm just happy that these are finally being re-released by Criterion.

I'm disappointed that we're only getting one new release with Broadcast News. Army of Shadows had a decent release by Studio Canal, so even that isn't that new. Robinson Crusoe on Mars is the one release that has me excited.

I'm not knocking Clowes in general, I think he's quite talented. I just don't think he's the right stylistic fit for the Fuller titles, and it definitely seems to be a marketing choice, as opposed to an artistic one. But hey, Fuller in HD is Fuller in HD, and these were in serious need of upgrades, so it's all good.

I'm willing to bet it's more like Clowes is a big fan of Fuller than any calculated attempt to market it to people who wouldn't normally pay attention to those titles.

If that's the case, I wonder if Clowes found out about the Fuller reissues while working with them on Ghost World, and asked if he could create the cover art. Criterion, happy to please someone they wanted to collaborate with in the future, said sure.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

From the Criterion Forum:
Criterion will be releasing Robert M. Young's Alambrista! (1977). I know the commercial illustrator who was hired to do the cover art which was finalized a few months back. It's a fairly under the radar title - as no one has seemed to speculate about its release. Criterion is leveraging the Arizona Immigration law as the related hot topic., ... they provided a DVD-R working copy to the illustrator.
