This is exactly why I hesitate to buy the picture-boxed dvd now. I agree that The Virgin Spring is one of Bergman's most well-known films, along with Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries and Fanny and Alexander.

...maybe I just like those films a lot more than you? It's....pretty easy to understand my reasoning. Not much depth to it. Not just nostalgia but...also...an amalgam of old and new action stars kicking ass..that goes beyond nostalgia by a wee bit.

*imagining*....theoritically...if he did...there'd be less action...wonder how he'd do it?

Wasn't trying to belittle, just trying to figure it out.

Some people like things that other people may not like.

There, figured it out for you.

But the release it has is pretty new already.

I'd guess F&A & Wild Strawberries first, then re-issues of some of the older, possibly non-anamorphic releases (Magic Flute, Autumn Sonata, Cries & Whispers), and then we'd see Virgin Spring.

Not quite that simple - we both liked the same thing at one point. And I never said I don't like those action films, just not as much. So what is it that makes someone hold on to that same love/appreciation they had in their youth and what makes the other person move on?

Why are you dragging this on? The guy likes something more than you, it really is that simple. Some people liked comic books when they were kids, but then as they got older decided they were no longer interested in them. Other people liked comics as children and still love them now. Should we give those people shit for not growing up?

Expendables (Arnold, Stallone, Willis, Rourke, Lundgren, Erik Roberts, Gary Daniels, Li) = 1980s/early 1990s action movie nostalgia

It's also about how 80s/90s action films were filmed as well, much better than today's CGI-influenced MTV quick cut action movies. I think people that want to see this film expect it to be filmed in that 1980s/1990s style.

That's an interesting knee-jerk reaction that you think I'm trying to "give someone shit for not growing up". Me, with a cartoon avatar.

So, excuse me for attempting a dialog with a little more depth to it than "yeah, can't wait for that to come out!!".

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by these simplistic, reductive lines of reasoning, which I suppose explain the fascination with similarly conceived movies.

*Carry on with your sycophantic ravings.

*now, that's "giving you shit"!

Umm. You said:
"I guess having grown up and moved on makes me weird..."

You are the one that brought up that you have 'grown up' as a reason for not caring for those films. Also, you're the first person to use this condecending attitude towards anyone in this thread. The dude asked about a Criterion movie, and you went after him for being excited about the Expendables. Just stop.

Now, can we drop it and get back on topic, please?

Seems like I touched a nerve in you that I didn't mean to. It's you who needs to stop reading stuff into things that aren't there. Whatever it is that makes you think that statement was meant in the pejorative is your issue. Get over yourself and move on.

Nope, didn't touch a nerve. I was just desperately trying to get you to stop going on and on about this in a Criterion thread.

Anyway, I bid you adieu good sir. I have said enough, and I realize I have been continuing to contribute to the derailing of this thread. I am done.

Got almost everything I planned on getting & was holding off on until this sale.

Picked up (I might be forgetting something) . . .

Stagecoach
The Leopard
Red Shoes
Mystery Train (blind-buy)
Sanjuro/Yojimbo Box Set
Lola Montes
Vivre Sa Vie

Only thing I didn't get that I wanted was Black Narcissus, might make 1 more trip this weekend for it, but I'm in no rush as it would be a triple-dip for me.

By Brakhage: Volumes 1 and 2
Days of Heaven
Mystery Train
Che
The Vanishing (DVD)

I would be curious to know what the ratio of DVD sales to Blu Ray sales is. It seems like Criterion is marketed towards more serious film fans who might have more of a desire to buy Blu, which would mean the sales would be pretty close, if not greater in high def.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Here's my haul on blu.

The Leopard
Red Shoes
Black Narcissus
Mystery Train
Lola Montes
Vivre Sa Vie
Everlasting Moments
Brakhage 1 & 2
Ride With the Devil
Secret of the Grain
Close Up
Walkabout
Gimme Shelter
Monterey Pop
Days of Heaven
Playtime
Monsoon Wedding
Che
Hunger
Red Desert

Practically nothing else on DVD: I think just the new Ozu set and the Costa set. Edit: and Rossellini's War Trilogy. I agree with another post I saw: too bad we don't have day and date blu-ray releases on all new Criterions.

Sale doesn't end until Monday night. I'll post my tally then as I may pick up another title or two.
