The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yes. They are accidentally putting in the price of $39.95, thinking it is a regular single Criterion release. Mildred Pierce and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown are priced at $39.95 as well. It is definitely an error.

Heads Up!
Amazon has Linklater's "Before Trilogy" for less than $40. Retail is $100, so this looks like a pricing error. Better act fast on this one.

Grabbed it...used a gift card I received on my birthday to bring my cost down from $43.75 to $0.00, and even though everyone and their mother on this board has figured out a way to get $100 Criterions for 50-60% off, I figure that this set will still have a good resale value even if I remove the shrinkwrapped to watch the films (never saw them in theaters, and I feel I will be willing to put in the time to watch them). Also, nice find DVD Talkers on the Lone Wolf and Cub bonus, will have to carefully check out the case when I get home from work.
So far, so good...they have not cancelled my order.

That was short-lived. Amazon has already bumped the Before trilogy up to the $99.99 MSRP.

grabbed it too. never saw the movies, never really had an interest when they were released. but, i like Linklater's stuff for the most part and these did get critically heralded...

Didn't all the orders for the really low initial price on the previous Criterion box set get shipped and received? If so, it sure seems like this isn't a price error. Just a more direct way to get a price like the one you would during a 50% off or more sale later down the line.

Yeah, at 50%, you'd like to think that Amazon could have knowingly priced a blu-ray at that price. But this was a bit better than that, so it is good to lock it in to be safe.
With preorders, they guaranteed to match the lowest price during the preorder window. I preordered some season of Lost way back for 30% off or whatever I thought was a decent deal. Then one day a week or so before release, it was 50% off for the whole day. I kept my preorder since I knew that they would refund the difference or match the price before billing me. But, instead I paid the original preorder discounted price of 30% off. I complained to them, and they claimed that the 50% off was a pricing error, even though I know they honored orders placed at that price. I pretty much stopped preordering at that point, and if I do, I cancel and reorder when I see a better price. Yeah, exciting story.

I had 0 issues w Lone Wolf, well other than i had pre ordered when it went up in August and under a debit card before i had a chip. so because i had a dif card, they declined it, so i had to go and update shit, but it all worked out in the end and got it for what they advertised.
Managed to get Before at $39.99, and got the confirmation email that my order went through.

So there was a price error on a CC BD before LW&C? What was it? Just so that I can hate myself...

No, just Lone Wolf and Cub and the Sunrise Trilogy have been mis-priced thus far, on Amazon. Although I did get World on a Wire and Anatomy of a Murder several years ago for $16.99 each.

Typically they honor it but I've had cases where they've cancelled my order. It seems to happen when they make the same sort of pricing error twice with the same company's product. For example, just recently, Amazon has had pricing errors on two different DC books. They honored the first one released but ended up canceling the second one. Hopefully that won't be the case here.

Yeah, with it happening so soon after Lone Wolf, it's starting to feel like an Amazon doorbuster type deal. Maybe trying to get an edge on Barnes & Noble.

So from here on out, once announcement are made, we need to start checking Amazon for when the pre-order links go up.

Amazon is too smart and clever for a pricing error repeat. I'm on the intentional pricing side on the LW&C and the Before trilogy.

Given Costco now gets pretty much every new Criterion BD release, and recently had the multiple title box sets really cheap, maybe there is testing going on by Criterion to see just how many more units they can sell if the easily found price is closer to 19.99 for each title. Or less (14.99 per movie) if it's a multiple title box set.

This must vary by store. My local Costco never carries more than three or four Criterion titles at a time, and they're rarely the latest releases. They're usually discs that were released in the previous business quarter. They'll sit for about three months and then disappear, to be cycled out with another three or four titles.
